I haven't looked in my rebuild books but do any of you know if the crank
register is the same between a 1966-273 and a 1985-318? I have a 85-318
and need to know if the flywheel from my 66 273 will bolt on. Would be nice to know before I build the motor. thanks toolmanmike

Should bolt in. Make sure there is an adequate counterbore for your pilot bushing. I don't think the crank flange moved in-out over the years. Hopefully somebody has measured a later crank to confirm. There might be a balance issue so you may wish to have everything spun if it is out of the chassis.

Thanks for the info Chief. I didn't want to build a motor and find out it wouldn't work without changing everything else. toolmanmike

Sorry to rain on your parade but the crank register changed in 1968. Your '66 flywheel won't bolt up to an '85 crank. The '85 crank won't be drilled for a pilot bushing either. On the brighter side though, all you will need is a neutral balance small block flywheel from '68 up and the MP pilot bearing for an automatic crank. You will have to cut about 3/4" off the nose of the transmission input shaft to make it work. If it was me, I'd put the '66 crank in the '85 block.

Good idea, I diddn't think of that. I just happen to have an extra forged 273 crank in the garage. Any body need a 85 318 crank? Freshly turned 10-10.
