how can i tell if i have a 8 3/4 rear ? last 3 numbers on my rear are 742 it is a suregrip , tomm it will come apart ran out of time today thanks guys - angelo

if there is no rear inspection cover, its an 8 3/4.

The fact that you're saying it says 742, likely on the lower part near the pinion on the driver's side, you have an 8 3/4.

If it says 742 you've got the "gem" of the 8 3/4 rears. That rear has a serviceable clutch pack also. Lucky you.

`yeh i think it was ecatly 207742 not sure i will get the numbers tomm , do it is an 8 3/4 and yeh it says that on the Ham on the rear by the driveshaft ,

amd what is That rear has a serviceable clutch pack ?

It's a "Dana Power Lok" clutch pack. You can take it apart and rebuilt it. (install new clutches)

Hold on fellas, without a picture of his actual SG unit in, it can't be assumed that his 742 has the powerlock SG, as the Auburn and the powerlock are interchangable in every case. What is not interchangable is the pinion shaft, unless you are unlucky enough to have the problem of having a bastard pinion bearing to install an incorrect shaft in any case, like the problem another member is having with his 489 case. A pic of the actual SG case will tell the tale if you have one, 1994rm250. Either way, you're still spinning both of em'!!! As a point of contention, the Auburn unit is actually considered a superior design because of the way it works, and is not subject to clutch slippage. Although the powerlock is of course rebuildable, the Auburn is also a serviceable unit, provided the cone has not bottomed out and scored the bottom of the case. Rock on and keep em' burning, Geof

cosgig: Yes we are assuming it's a power loc because the auburn units didn't come in a 742 case. The auburn unit would've been installed after market.

Yes, I agree, although he did not give any information about it's origin. I would say 80% of the time, you will find the original suregrip still installed. However, I have had many different PIGs and SG units, and whenever I wanted to switch ratios and only had the desired ratio in a non-suregrip case, I simply swapped in whatever SG unit I had extra lying around. Sold a few setups that way too, so I must contend that without pics of the actual unit, it is not safe to say that he has the powerlock unit and therefore
he should not be led to believe as such until the actual proof is in the perverbial pics. Either way, as I said before, at least he's still spinning them both!!! Geof

Got a PM from him and he said the unit has a ring of bolts on the end of it to hold the case together. If that's not a Power Loc then I guess I need a photo too.

yeh its a power lock , me and my pops took the it out and counted the teeth its got 5.36 gears in it , i guess the duster i got it from was running 8th mile track ? then , well its getting sent out this week to this guy that builds rears so i can have 4.10's

Wow, only a 5:36, huh? Those are gonna come in handy!!! I think you'll like the 4:10's just a little bit better. Nice find though, i'll bet you could find a couple drag racers who could use those 5:36's. Good luck with your project, Geof
