Very sad story indeed. When I was 16 the first car my dad bought me was a Dodge Charger. I hated that car. Every time I barely pushed the gas pedal I was scared to death because of the power it had. I was glad when he got rid of it. It was to much of a car for me as a beginning driver.

It's their parents fault. My dad wouldn't let me have a fast car until I was around 18 yrs old. And after that I had some scary moments in my 68 Dodge Charger that he never new about. One of my friends got killed in a 280ZX he was 17. Their parents aren't to smart thinking that they was going to obey the speed limit in a brand new 2011 Challenger..... I mean come on!!

My prayers to the families and friends of the victims.

When I was in high school there were four kids from a neighboring town who had pretty much this same accident in an Escort. They left a steep, curvy road, launched over a ditch, and hit a row of trees with the roof.

Hardly the fault of the car when the driver is unprepared to be able to drive.

This is horrible news. Who in thier right mind buys a 16 year old a performance car? They will have to live with that bad decision for the rest of thier lives.

speeding is speeding. a 4 cyl. pt cruiser is capable of speeding and having the same results.

Perfect example of why Kyle Busch should have been held up as an example and held accountable for driving 128 in a 45 MPH zone. Maybe if it had been circulated news that he had to serve jail time and lose his license like everybody else, it is possible this terrible tragedy might not have happened. You never know. My heart goes out to the families.

A good used truck is the way to go with new drivers, they can see better out of one and tell them every family needs a truck... Very sad that these children are gone today mainly because the parents made a bad call, I agree homecloned, these people want to show there wealth and don't have a brain to make a decision, they must have old money from there grandparents, very sad, Prayers to the family and friends.

C'mon abodyjoe. So you are saying a 4 banger is as fast as a v8 in the same distance? I get your point but be realistic here.

I wasn't trying to be an *** with my comment but does it make sence for a new driver to have that kind of car.

so a good used truck can't do 100 mph? everyone is focused on the challenger. just about anything on the road can do 100 mph and end up like that. it is what it is. the kid made a stupid decision to drive faster then he was capable of handling and paid for it with his and 2 of his friends life.

no its not as fast in the same distance. but look at the map of that road. its real straight. i know i can hit close to 100 in my little 1.5L yota on a road like that.. the article doesn't say how fast they were going. can a PT do 70 mph on that road? i say hell yes. and i'm sure 70mph could do damage like that when hitting a tree with the roof.

Agreed. The kid made a stupid decision and it cost his life and his friends. I am all for raising the driving age to 18. No thats not the cure all but it would make a hugh difference.

But Joe I think even you have to admit, sometimes it's not how fast something can go, it's how quickly it can get there. For an untrained, inexperienced driver that cannot judge how quickly a fast car can get there, that car was a bad choice. I agree with your overall point though and I think you're trying to say that dead is dead no matter what it's in. And you're right.

True. I have seen a 4cyl escort wrapped around a pole and it wasn't going that fast. Again....young drivers.

It might make a difference with girls, but I'm not so sure with boys.

18 for a full license i agree. i also think they should get a permit at 15. that way they get to drive 3 years before they get a license. here kids wait till they are 16 and get a permit and get a license at 17.

problem is the article doesn't say what really happened. he could have decided to nail the gas a quarter mile before the accident and got to speed too fast. or they could have been doing 90 for 10 miles and just lost control at that point. we don't know. it may have nothing to do with hemi power or can have everything to do with hemi power. all i'm saying is people see 2011 challenger and assume it was too much car for them. but in reality a 4 cyl car can and will do 100 mph and have the same results. in the same distance ? no. but we don't know where the kids started their high speed.

If there was some way to have a mandatory age of 18 for a "full privledge" license maybe these young kids may actually get more "road time" under them before they are allowed to drive at certain hours at night. Not saying that this would have made any difference. I do however still think that for a newly licensed 16 yr old driver to be driving a car with that much power then it was a bad mistake from an experienced drivers standpoint. You DO NOT give any 16 yr old the keys to a "muscle car" and not expect that there will be consequences as a result of such a decision.

in NJ the kid can get their permit at 16. then a cinderella license at 17. can't drive past a certain hour and can't have more then one other kid in the car with them. i think they get the full license at 18. don't remember. personally i think they need their permit earlier to get more experience on the road before they can drive alone.

It's akin to blaming a shooting on the gun.

When my step daughter was learning to drive it would scare the heck out of me. On one day she drove probable 30 miles all over town with my wife with no problems. Then as she is pulling into the driveway...BAM! She runs into the house! Luckally she or no one was else hurt. One reason I will never stand in front of or behind a car that isn't parked.
