Thats correct. Imagine the oil trying to get out and hitting that wall instead of the ramp if it were backwards. Id **** it about 1/8 inch proud of flush on one side to make the parting line off center of the main cap parting line. Or not if you got the wings attached. Some do, some dont.
This version of the rear main seal has wings which slip into the #5 main cap which I kept. I installed it as you see in the picture (no offset) just added a bit of grease to the lips and a tiny film of RTV to the mating surface area. Hopefully it works.
