Wonder if anybody can clear this up for me. Bought a '74 Duster with an engine in it that looked like somebody was halfway through yanking it out. Just towed it home and it has just sat through winter. Started looking at it to get engine fired and first noticed it was "red". Then eventually pulled air cleaner and found this facing backwards. Checked cast date, it is Oct. of '67. I thought all early LA 318's were rated at 230 HP. Any ideas ?

Yup, truck/industrial air cleaner. Check to see which spark plugs are installed. If they're the standard 14mm car/pickup gasket type, you probably have the typical 318-1 car/pickup engine. If they're the 18mm tapered seat plug, you have a 318-3 industrial engine. Those have unique heads, timing covers, water pumps, and intake manifolds. Some versions have unique (8 bolt) crankshafts too. Some photos of the rest of the engine might provide a clue to what you have.
