318 poly... Hemi?

-
You were told wrong.

The "A" engine did evolve out of the early Hemi, but the blocks were different. Not much will interchange.

I wouldn't screw around with an early Hemi unless I was building a traditional hot rod. For an A-body, I'd go straight to an RB engine if a moderate LA was not enough.

Yes, the information you were given was definately wrong about the 318 A (Poly.) The 318, 277, and 301 all evolved out of the Plymouth line of Poly's from the '50s and were never used as foundations for 1G Hemis.

The early A engine has a polysphericle combustion chamber Thats why they call them 318 poly's. Early Hemi heads will not interchage with it.
