Hello fellas,
I'm brand new to mopars but always wanted one. I picked up a nice 71 Demon a little while ago. It has a rebuilt stock 318 2 barrel 85 roller block from what the previous owner told me. The engine casting is 432383031814. While I cant find any exact data showing that its a roller block I think it is by the number.
Anyways I love the car but its a bit gutless. So my plan is to put a 600cfm 4 barrel carb and edelbrock performer intake. So my main question is what cam to run? With this block being a roller block can any LA roller cams work in it? Or does the roller block LA need a different cam. I was thinking of using a cam with around 250 duration and .450 lift. Without having any mopar experience is that a good range for a nice street motor? I appreciate any info thanks guys.

You need to verify the casting date which is on one side of the block....I can't remember right off the top of my head....should be 1985-1991 and also have the engine Cubic Inch cast into the same side 318,360.

Once you verify 85-91 318, I recommend this cam, with your above listed intended mods AND dual 2.5" exhaust with/without a H/X.

Without removing the heads from the block,...your intended upgrades, and my recommended exhaust, this cam should boost your rear wheel horsepower from 180ish to 250-275ish.

Without knowing anything else about your car, thats all I can say........well that and WELCOME ABOARD!

Before I recomend a cam, what tranny? gear ratio?
what do you want outta the car and

a roller block can use any cam Hyd, mechanical or roller EXCEPT a Magnum cam since it has a short snout. That means it has no provisions to make the fuel pump work.

Look for a cam with the duration numbers that work with the RPM operating band yu want to drive in.
Your stock cam has a advertised duration of 252, so that 250 is smaller than stock.

What grumblefish said, and to addm the pushrods are different if it has a roller cam, and just because it is a roller block, doesnt mean it has the roller cam, many wer sent out with flat tappet cams.

The block number basically tells you it has the bosses drilled for the rollers

Thanks guys, the car has a new TCI built 904 with a stock stall converter, rear-end is a 8 3/4 with 3.23 gears. I mainly would like to get this thing a high 13's car thats still very streetable. On the cam duration I guess I should have stated 250 @.50. Is there anyway of telling if its a roller cam and lifter without pulling the intake?

Is that boat a Rienell??

250@fifty is wayyy too big for a stock TC in a 318.........

High 13's....... Hmmmmmmm

You want in the 220ish spot.

Pull the valve cover off and take a pushrod out and peek in there?

How about this Engle cam??

Part #: 4456-H
Grind #: K-56HYD

Damn...now that I know the rest of your setup, my recommendation is even better.

But I recommend before doing ANYTHING performance wise to your 318...change the Nylon Timing Gear and stretched out chain for a quality Double Roller gear set....peace of mind is priceless.

..............I have a 85 and a 86 block , both have hyd flat tappet cams...bummer....both have 302 heads,....yeah.......................kim........

The only real upside to the factory roller blocks is the ability to use stock lifters and spider in them when running a roller cam. That saves a few hundred bucks on the lfiters but you need to buy the dogbones and spider for them in most cases. Otherwise, it's all the same. If you are goign with the hyd roller, I would be looking for something in the 230°.050 range and plan on changing the convertor to a 2200 stall unit. They are inexpensive and it lets you keep the mild cruising gearing. Does the car have power brakes? If you've got power brakes then I'd go 5° less on the duration at .050.

The car has manual brakes, and nice mandrel bent 2.5" dual exhaust with factory exhaust manifolds. I'm hoping the the previous owner who rebuilt the whole motor put in a nice timing chain set but I guess I'll have to check it out.
Tonight I'm going to pull the valve cover and see what heads I have and see if I can see the cam type from there.

Oh and the boat is a old caravelle.

thanks gents:salute:

I don't know what the block numbers would be for a roller cam block. Maybe TK does? He mentioned it or something about drilled bosses. Otherwise I'd pull the valve cover off and measure the pushrod length. You'l need to take off the rocker shaft. It must be put on exactly as taken off for oiling purposes. Roller cam engines have a short pushrod. SO, short pushrod for me would equal a roller cam inside. But I stil wouldn't know if it was drilled for the spider or could be able to be drilled for a spider.

250 @ .050! WOW! Yea, that ia a big difference, LOL! What Moper said then, I think will do ya fine.
Would a gear ratio change be ok with you?

I have no clue..... Casting #'s on blocks in the newer engines never intrested me, and I got more important things to stuff my feeble mind with, like the PROPER way to rebuild and set of a reverse rotation boat motor...... LOL

I believe by casting date 86, ALL were drilled, and by 85 MOST were drilled, but still kept the flat tappet cam most of the time. ALL TBI's were roller, what was that, 89?

Oh, and the cam, I still stand by my original cam, tuned right, you shouldbe low 14's, high 13's with a stock TC.

Well it's definitly a roller. I also can tell that it has a double roller timing set.
