I'm completely stumped with this issue, hoping I've just overlooked something simple. Sorry for the lengthy post, trying not to leave any info out.
Last Saturday I took the truck out for a short drive, about 6 miles, zero issues other than still trying to get the 1-2 shift point lower. Tweaked the cable a little, out for a short drive the next day and it stumbles, but is otherwise fine.
This past Sunday just gone, I get about 2 miles into a drive, it stumbles, cuts out and then gives me a fit to stay running and cuts out as soon as I tried to move. Eventually get it running and limp home in 2nd thinking it's something with the trans cable.
Pulled all that off and ordered the Bouchillon kit, don't have that yet, but wanted to make sure everything else is good. I hooked up a vacuum gauge, started the engine and let it warm up, then adjusted the mixture screws to the highest vacuum before backing them off 1/4 turn, adjusted idle, tweaked timing, it's sitting and idling nicely. Vacuum is stable right around 20in.
Then it starts to buck and stumble and cuts out, just like it did Sunday. I've got no accelerator pedal hooked up, pull the linkage at the carb and I hear a squirt of fuel, starts back up. Stumbles and cuts out a couple more times. Since I'm under the hood I can see the fuel pressure gauge and it's not moving at all from 5psi, so I'm fairly certain it's getting fuel. The line from the regulator to the carb is new, the filter isn't that old, pump, tank, sending unit are all only about 2 years old.
With it running I sprayed starter fluid carefully around the carb base and intake manifold, no change in rpm, pretty sure there's not a vacuum leak.
It's restarting instantly, turn the key and it starts. Get under the hood, hold the carb open a few seconds at around 2,000rpm and it's running fine, let it back to idle and it sits there idling fine again. Shut it off and back on a handful of times, it's acting completely normal.
Initial timing set with the vacuum advance disconnected is 15° btdc, the intake manifold is an Edelbrock 2176 I put on a few weeks ago, brand new Edelbrock AVS2 carb, timing chain was replaced in October. It's got a Pertronix billet distributor with the ignitor module. I was running an HEI setup and had the factory ECU removed, should that be back on with the HEI removed and running the Pertronix distributor? Spark plug wires are all only a few months old, coil is also pretty new (I get components can fail).
I'm basically stumped, it being apparently intermittent makes this the worst thing to try and track down.
Any ideas? About to throw in the towel and call a tow truck to take it to a shop. Thank you
