Just posting an update on the tear down of my stock 318 engine before I send it off to the machine shop for cleaning and boring. If the block is tested and found to be in good shape I plan on boring and stroking the engine. Pictures below. I wonder if anyone can tell why it was running so rough.....?????

im guessing it took a number 2 in cyl number 2 is why it was running so rough. my numbers matching motor looks like it was 6 inches deep in the dirt on an angle for 10 years so i am hoping that i can do what you are going to do to yours to mine.

So what rotating assembly are you planning to use?
                            Horsepower and torque goals?

I'll be following this. I have an '86 318 cop motor, I'm thinking of doing the same thing with.

Maybe things have changed now but 4 or 5 years ago when I did my motor I was hell-bent on stroking my 318. When I found out that not a lot of people are doing the 318 and the 318 had more expensive pistons then the 360 stroker Pistons. At the time I was hel- bent on stroking the 318, but when I basically found out they cost more than the 360 ? That didn't start making cubic sense? My machine shop sold me a 360 core for $150 and I never looked back. (But looking back I have bought 360s for 50 bucks but of course buying it from the shop it's pretty much guaranteed not to be cracked)
With all that said I'm definitely subscribe as I would have liked to known how my 318 would have done had I spent the extra money. It's really only 20 cubic inches here though, I doubt if it would make that much of a difference. It's still going to be a monster!

Funny thing is is I believe that's what I have too? The story I got was from the previous owner and they said they worked in a wrecking yard and pulled the motor and transmission out of a Pursuit car. It was a 318 with 360 heads and a 727 transmission. When I looked the numbers up on the 318 block it came up "race block" Doesn't have R. I'm sure it's just a factory remanufactured block or something.

NO, more RPM"s can make more power. In fact when the limit for racers were 305 cubic inches, nobody stroke the motors and used smaller pistons, they de stroke them and spun the motors to 8,000 RPM's

I like to see 2 engines race together, one a 390 with a 5,500 RPM limit and the other engine, those old 305's with a 8,000 RPM limit.

Bet the 305 would make more power and lower ET's

Now how would both engines be on the street, ah, the 390 would be the better street engine.

I am copying a build a while back from hot rod magazine. Not going to reinvent the wheel here.

Why not use 340 factory rods, they be stronger. I snap a 318 rod once.

I’m sure you’re correct about the strength.
I am copying the exact blueprint from a previous build. Not trying to reinvent the wheel. I know this engine makes 400hp with pump gas and zero fab work other than engine block machining. I don’t have the expertise to know if 340 rods would change the stroke or force me to use a different parts from that list.

Hold on a second! 273 crank? That's not stroking?
