I need some opinions on replacing my cam and lifters.
my 340 was just rebuilt and the cam got wiped out within 4 miles.
what I would like to do is drain the oil and flush the engine (if there is a way to flush it) and install a new cam and lifters. I guess my question is should I try this, or does the engine have to come out and come apart again??

Depending on how bad it ate itself, you could already have bearing damage. Surely the pump injested some metal and best case would be the filter caught the rest. Have you pulled the intake, lifters and cam to evaluate the damage?

Ouch! .....Lets see if anyone chimes in about the flush job, although i kinda have a feeling where this is gonna go.

BTW, what cam and springs did you use?

Not sure what valave springs were used, the guy that did the heads took the specs from my cam and claims he used the correct springs for my cam.

If somebody dropped a hand full of sand into the valley of the engine while you had the intake manifold off the engine, would you try to flush it or disassemble and clean it?

I've seen the cam simply replaced and work for a long time and I've seen two more cams wiped out until the engine was torn down and completely cleaned.

Your engine, your gamble.

.............i'd pull it and dissamble it, clean it good, then clean it again........u will need all bearings and an oil pump.........kim.....

or I could just pull out the 340 and stuff my 440 in it. If it has to come out it's staying out!!

Thanks for all the replies Guys.......and Gal!!

pull the filter cut it in half and see if there are mostly tiny flakes or or flattened larger flakes(chunks that were flattened when they went through the oil pump gears), IF its tiny flakes, change out the cam, change the oil and filter a couple of times and let her rip, I had the same thing happen on 2 lobes on a chevy 194 six banger and I flushed it by 2 oil and filter changes and it was still running fine when I sold it a year layer

The 318 in my car sounded great, ran smooth and revved quick.Looking thru the cap the springs looked new.So I figured I would freshen it up and run it,no dice appearntly the cam lobe failed and the PO just put a new cam in(maybe flushed the engine, maybe not). When I looked at the bearings they were shot and the crank needed turning. There was chunks of metal all in the oil pump screen(which doesn't stop much).A good cleaning is what it really needs,by this I mean pull the crank and flush the journals, replace or open the oil pump and throughly clean it.just my 2 cent from recent experiance.
