340 or 383 for 1968 Dart

-
BS on poor handling, I have an original 383 car and it handles fine, all cast heads, intake and exhaust manifolds. Nothing wrong with a 383, just swap carbs and a custom cam.
Exactly. Just let @abodyjoe come in here and see this nonsense. He had a 440 in a 64 Valiant. It handled fine.

i can see the trends changing in the hobby.Where once builds were restoration oriented or day 2, now modern
engine and drivetrains are routinely finding their way in to these old classics. The new or younger enthusiasts
don't have much interest in originality in these 60's cars.

I like the slant 6 for the same reason. You should see the looks on guys faces when I pull into a cruise in and they've not seen Vixen before. They all flip slam out that a slant 6 can make all that noise. Same kinda thing when you open the hood and there sits a big block.

Back in 2010, I bought a 71 340 Duster that had a 318/904 combination. I intended to put a Gen III Hemi in it. All of my Mopar, Chevy, and Ford buddies convinced me that a genuine 340 car demands a 340 to be put back into it. Soooo, after a few years (and quite a few $$$) I have a complete matching 71 340/727 combination from a different car, a disassembled standard bore 68 340 as a spare parts source, various intake manifolds, carbs, cams, heads, and rear third members.

I also bought a 1969 Dodge Polara 500 convertible with the numbers matching 330hp 383/727 combination. It is my freeway/highway and beach cruiser. I bought this because I wanted a big block car again and b-body prices were astronomical.

Oh, and my Gen III car is a 2007 Charger RT that I bought in 2011 after I took the Duster off of the road to put the 340 in it.

All of this because I wanted a Gen III in a Duster.

Hay, is that 68 340 a 4 speed motor? Does it still have the cam?

about damn time.. mopar guys are decades behind gm and ford guys on that..

the new or younger enthusaists want cars that they can drive and enjoy a car that runs, handles and stops more like modern cars. way too many oldheads were way too much of purests in my opinion.. god forbid it had something non mopar/non original on it. i guess in their defense the cars didn't have to do much other then sit in a parking lot for 8 hours for yet another stupid car show or in a garage when not sitting in a parking lot.

lol.. i got rid of my first lil red express truck because i wanted to put a 440 in it and my friends talked me out of it because the truck was so original.. its not like i wouldn't have kept the 360 under the bench but i said screw it and sold it.. after i sold it they were all upset i sold it... asked why. told them it wasn't fast enough and you guys talked me out of putting a 440 in it.. :)

I think everyone would agree improving these old relics handling and braking is a good idea.
Don't be too hard on purists or old heads. Some of them are nice people.

Yup, they build what they want- just like we all do.
Life would be pretty boring if everyone had the same junk!

In the 2 years that the dart GTS was made, there were less than 15,000 produced.
Wonder how many are still un restored and yet to be found?

Yes, but they also want me to build what they want, too. Needs to be a 2 way street and while most are willing to let people do what they want, there are some that are over the top belligerent.

I could post quotes from one individual with a really nice Cuda that is no longer part of the forum, if you wanted. Or all the guys hating on 17" wheels. Plenty of examples of people pushing their opinion instead of letting people build what they want.

Sure, you could argue that it's just their opinions, but some push it like anyone with an opinion that differs should sell their car and forsake the hobby entirely.

Ah...you get that in every aspect of life. There are lots of people that think their way is the only correct way.
I just say " I think you're right...i'm going to change that this winter " They walk away happy, convinced they
know much more than I do and fixed me but good!

you would be surprised. 14" rims and stock drum brake or nothing crowd it still super strong.. like i said mopar guys are way behind the other makes..

i'm considered a oldhead to many now too so no worries..:)

Except that on here they don't walk away. They follow you around and post on all kinds of topics that they don't care about. If you don't want 17" or 18" wheels on your car, why post in a thread asking questions about it?

In regards to your original question, my opinion is, if it was a real 340 car and there was a 340 available, I would put the 340 in it. Then I would go find a /6 Dart or something and put the 383 stuff in it.

That said, if it was strictly a 340 vs 383 (or 400), I'm not sure. I've wanted a BB Duster for years, even picked up a 400 and bought my son's '73 from him to build one. Then he wanted the Duster back, so we worked a deal and later I sold the 400 to a friend (who put it in a '67 Dart :) ). I still daydream about a BB A-Body, so I can't say for sure I would go SB if I had a car with no drivetrain and a SB or BB to put in it.

I think the BB has some advantages, beyond just size. But the big deal for me is I just love the look.

If it was 1968 and I walked into a dealership I'd buy the 340 GTS over the 383.
If it was 1998 I'd store the 340 and install a big block because of all the parts I've accumulated.
If it was 2028 I'd have sold off all of my junk and switched to the LS platform. Times change.

If it was 2032 I would be putting a used Tesla Drive Line in and riding in cold A/C

I'm going for the gusto
Pffff... 340 or 383
