so i got my 75 scamp and paid $1200 for it. it had a "318". so i took out that motor to put my rebuilt 360 in. now i find out all the outside parts are not bolting to the 360. so we are pretty sure it is a 340 so if someone is looking for a 340 that needs rebuilt let me know lol and make me a offer lol:-D

Can you write down the numbers on the side of the block or take a picture of the sides of the block. Then we will know what we are dealing with. Thanks

all the parts should interchange regardless if its a 273-318-340 or 360. Only part that doesnt swap is the 360 only oil pan.

What are the big embossed #'s on the driver side of the block you removed?

What "outside parts" are you talking about? The 318's and 340's share most of their parts, the 360's have some differences (oil pan for sure). Its easy enough to tell, just look at the driver's side of the old block. If its got a 318 cast into it at the end of the casting number then thats what it is...

The 318 and 340 also have different size mains as the 360.

* Driver's side motor mount is also different between a 318 and 340/360.
* Pully bolt pattern on the harmonic damper/balancer changed around '72 or so. But only one hole got offset and that can be elongated on the pulley.
* When installing a 360 or cast crank 340, you will need the proper counterweighted converter or get the correct flexplate from B&M to work with the neutral balanced 318 converter.

Is your 360 a Magnum by any chance? (10 bolts per valve cover)

ok it probably is the 318:neutral: the oil pan is what is wrong. i guess the rest fit. i have given the motor to a friend and he needs it as a 318. i will see for sure on friday. the car is originaly a 318 car. and with 55xxx original miles i would hope its the original engine. lol. thanks for the info i would of got all excited till friday just to get bumed lol

so will my 318 dampner work with the 360? and what about the fly wheel? they are machineing it so i would guess it will work

you need a damper from a 360...

flywheel or flexplate?

360 is externally balanced...it carries extra weight on the damper and flexplate/converter or the flywheel is balanced for the 360...

if is balance is not correct you will get an awhful vibration in the engine.

I had several parts that wouldn't interchange between mine hope I had the right motors.

Look at the casting number on the side of the block. The engine displacement will be in the casting number.

The flywheel needs to be balanced for a 360.

The balancer needs to be a 360 piece as well.

Your motor mount on the drivers side is too wide for the lug on the block. It may not have the holes in the right spot for the lugs. Here's a pic of one I modified. Looked just like the one on the right before meeting the grinder!
