looking to swap a 360 into my 66 dart. the trans was originaly behind a 273. can i just get a converter from a mid 80's dippy, new yorker, ect. with a 360 and bolt it up? will i need the flex plate also?

What year 273? If it's the original 66 they had an 18 spline input shaft. 68 and newer 904's (you didn't specify which trans. but that's what came behind 273's) had a 27 spline input shaft. There is also another issue, the torque converter pilot hub (the part that engages into the crank) is smaller on the older units. Your easiest and most cost effective way to go is to keep the original torque converter, buy a pilot hub adapter from Torqueflite Patty and get the B&M 360 balance plate.

get the B&M 360 balance plate.

That's my strategy. I currently have a late 360/ 727 in my 67, but I "might want" to put a 318/340 - or 360 in 'er. So I have a B&M lying here, and when I get a performance converter, I'll get a neutral balance and make it up with the B&M plate, if I use the 360

I'd get a 68 & up trans. It had the larger pilot & larger spines. 67 & under used the same trans & converter. I 2nd what Fishy said.

All good advice. Another option is to get the MP weight kit and have them welded to your existing converter. You will still need the crank bushing but it might be a little cheaper to get the weights rather than the flex plate. You also may want to consider the extra horsepower the existing 904 is going to absorb. It might be a good time for a transmission (and rear end if it's a 7 1/4) upgrade.
