I'm looking at a 400 block to possibly put in my 73 dart. Wanted some help with the casting numbers. 3698630 400 2. Cast in 1973. Sources say this was cast from 73 to 78 and there is a different cast number 4006530 that is for 76 to 78. Why would mopar have 2 different cast numbers for 76 thru 78. Was the earlier 73 to 78 cast blocks better or cast in a different plant?.

There were several different casting numbers used for the 400 block. The very early blocks are the best but getting hard to find these days. At this point I wouldn't worry about it too much. Have a shop pressure check it, measure the bore size, do a sonic check and a close visual inspection. If it passes all of that then go ahead and build it.

I think the 230 was the cold weather block. Cherished, but unnecessary for 80% of the strokers people want it for.

Thanks guys. I pretry much had my answers, I'm about to go look at this block and wanted a little more insight before I brought it home and not be what iam looking for.

In my library I have 3 numbers for casting numbers for 400 blocks : 3614230 , 3698630 is a 400 passenger , and , 4006350-400-12 . I may have the 360 inverted , could be 530 . A cool thing would be a 383 crank and rods in a 400 block . .030" over yields a high revving 403 cu in. smooth running combo .

Yeah you have it flipped its 4006530, but any ways I was just trying to figure out why you could potentially have 2 different casting numbers from year 76 to 78. I figured it was a difference of where it was cast or one was for passenger car and the other was motorhome.
