ok who can recommend a 408 balanced rotating system that is the best......will be buying one in the next month or so...would like you HONEST opinons.......will run x heads with 2.05/1.65 valves....appreciate any comments or recipes of your build....want to do it right the first time

set-up is 408/727/8-3/4 3:55's....maybe 4sp not sure thou

thanks for your help in advance

Joe

I guess the best would be forged. I am in the process of building a low buck 408 right now. I could only afford cast and hyper pistons. Eagle crank and rods and KB Quench dome pistons.

hey badart

do you think coated pistons will work ?....forged is what I was thinking about....did you buy a complete rotating assy balanced?.....

joe

when do you expect to crank it up......i am abiut 2 month out when i buy the 408 package...

give dave at hughes engines a call or visit there web site. hughesengines.com
they have pretty nice kits..

heard a ton of good things about scat.. thats why i bought their kit. haven't done anything with it yet though. from what i have read don't buy a balanced assembly from anyone. but the un-balanced kit and have your guy balance it.

If you aren't going crazy with the x heads, look in the specials section at Flatlanders racing. They have a cast crank kit for $919.

I didn't get mine as a kit. I originally bought an Eagle cast crank (which is for sale, by the way). It balanced easily and the main bearing clearance was perfect with it. I decided to build for more power, so I got an Eagle forged. They had to add some heavy metal to it, and it wasn't as easily balanced. Also, there's not enough bearing clearance on it, so looks like I'll be having more work done to it. I'm using eagle H beam rods and KB Step dish forged pistons with .030 milled off the step. The whole setup with the cast crank was about $1200 plus another $145 for balancing. The setup with the Forged crank was about $1650 plus about $200 for balancing. I did a lot of shopping around. Milling the pistons was around $200 also, but if you get flat top or regular dish, that won't be necessary...

With that said, you could get a setup with a cast crank and hyper pistons using stock rods for about $600 or less, plus balancing and assembly of the rods and pistons. I think Cast Eagle cranks are on sale at Mancini for $239 right now. Rods free if you use the ones you have, and about $425 for KB hyper flat top pistons. Another $100 for rings, so I guess $750-800.

If you go budget, the cast cranks are fine up to 500-600hp depending ont he crank used. Regardless of the crank and rods, pistons should be forged. As was said... Dont buy a balanced kit. Have it balanced. The only kit I've ever bought that was perfect out of the box in terms of final clearances and individual component quality was the mancini kit with the Callies crank, Eagle H beams, and Diamond pistons. This is not the cheapest, but you'll break the block before you break any part of the rotating assembly. The more you concern yourself with "the cheapest" the more you need to concern yourself with being well educated in how the parts work and fit together.
