408 Stroker vs RV 440

-
Thinking about building another motor.

I'm debating on turning my 360 magnum into a 408 stroker vs snagging a cheap/free RV 440 and basically doing top end, alum heads, intake cam ext.

Looking into pricing, i dont see what id call a massive difference either way. Which one do you think would be more fun for street use and maybe some stoplight to stoplight action when nobody's looking :D

I saw some engine masters clips on youtube where a 440 RV motor responded really well to just a top end build and had a pretty damn impressive torque curve/powerband.

It seems to me that the 440 makes about the same power down low as my current 360 magnum makes at the mid-top end, but ive also heard that the 408 strokers can be real torque monsters too.

weighing pros and cons, i think the stroker build would be easier as getting it to fit is a non issue and accessories/linkages ext would all remain the same. in favor of the 440, the idea just sounds really friggin cool...

Im always getting asked "does it have a 340?" and it would be funny to say no, it has a FOUR FORTY. :D

Looking for input either way from folks who have gone either route.
What top end would you run on the 408 ?

No,unfortunately I over revved it..great motor too blew the doors off big blocks

Nice, praying i have mine do sometime in spring.. but getting doubtful.. I'm not doing anything nuts though, am going to go easier on the cam i think just for drivability

For me, the small block is a no brainer, I will never like changing spark plugs on a big block, unless it's my Hemi. My SB is a .040 340, 418. Trick Flow heads, icon pistons, Howard's hyd roller, Molnar H-beam rods and 4" crank. Sixpack for induction and tti headers. Plus it weighs less for the street.

cruze mind if i ask what your specs are on the cam? not exact just curious how big you went. and i love that i have a small block in my b-body.. i can pull the headers in and out without removing anything.. it's amazing

Mike at B3 spec'ed it. PRW 1.6 stainless rockers, and partial geometry correction for trick flows. Smith pushrods, 3/8". This cam does not need a bronze geared oil pump shaft. It's a street cam, someone here will correct me, it's around. 565 lift? This engine is a torque monster, pretty much done around 5800 rpm.

.520 with 1.5s.. the cam i have in my 318 is a little bigger than that, was just curious how it is in a 408.. thought it might be a little small with the extra cubes.. be nice to save money on a new cam though :)

.555 with 1.6.... i'm using 1.5s on trick flows, no geometry shims though, lined up good when i set it up (at least as far as i could tell) :) thanks

I have a buddy running a jones cam.. i am thinking of having him spec one for me when the time comes.. Awesome that you don't need a bronze gear though. i do.. it makes me worry a little.. will see how it held up when i tear it apart

So got looking, with the price of how cheap this stroker bottom end is, is there any reason to deal with paying for all the machinework on a block and buying a 2-3000$ rotating assembly to still have to assemble it yourself?

price seems too good to be true?

the price is great and is about correct, my issues with it is i want a LA block for the shaft oiling (which is funny since it lists magnum but that's a LA in the pic.) Forged crank and pistons..

in fairness though that would be a great motor, i'm just paranoid and want something i can beat the piss out of and not worry, although i still will :)

Only big downsides I see is not knowing where the pistons are in relation to the deck and how much confidence I have in the care that goes into one of these mass produced reman motors. Seems you also have to provide a 360 block as a core too, or its an extra $260.

ATK does not have the best reputation.

Big downside is not knowing if the machine work is correct or the assembly is correct. When you assemble it yourself you can rest assured that it was put together correctly. Or at least I can.

Guess you decided on the 408? I think that's the better way to go from a real estate perspective in an A-Body. I made the same decision, but it was a 383 vs. 360.

Yeah im pretty convinced.
I recently did a swap in my 71 satellite Sebring Plus. 318, 904 trans to 440, 727 trans. 20-20 hindsight I would have done stroker to 390 with the 318. All the different brackets, headers, trans lines, etc. Really blew the budget. Can't beat the wow factor of a 440 6BBL.

Just my own opinion, not worth the proverbial grain of salt, but......
I have never been impressed with the parts used in an ATK engine compared with the price asked. IF I ever buy a crate motor (bbc 540 shortblock is attractive to me) I'll get it from Blueprint.
There is an exec from blueprint here that can possibly get you a deal.

Yeah 440 Sixpack is surely eye catching.... but you probably could have built the whole 390 for the cost of the sixpack.
