The car should be back on the road this summer. I will be looking for an aftermarket converter at some point, I'm thinking about something in the 2500 stall range. It's going to be a street car, mildly built 440 with stock 727 and 3.23 gears. Cost is a factor, I don't have money falling out of my....

Favorite brands to look at?
To stay away from?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Coan is good, so is Cope which I think is PTC. I hear too many bad posts about TCI and Hughes to ever trust them. Remember, this is one area where you generally get what you pay for. Save up and dont be sorry.

I've seen a few people recommend staying away from the cheaper brands like B&M, TCI, Hughes in favor of Turbo Action or custom...dynamic rings a bell for some reason. What I've gleaned out of reading others' opinions is that the inexpensive converters just heat the fluid more than they need to, and until the rated "stall", they just feel sloppy...whereas, if you spend the extra money up front for a custom stall suited to your application it drives better and reaction is more crisp.

Thanks guys, I was looking at the B&M and Hughes stuff, but I would rather have the good stuff for that.

dynamic, ultimate or turbo action custom built for your car .

I know price is a concern, but a custom build from the "above" companies in your stall range will be a absolute steal. I don't doubt you could get a quality unit from one of them for only a few bills, max, over the off the shelf stuff.

Make some calls, you won't be sorry in the end!

Considered, Turbo Action,on a budget. Compression, cam ,& gear, would make like easy,everywhere... Look at a 600-1000 ,for a custom converter(and worth ,every penny...).

excellant trans. man I know says hughs con. are good ones, if you match it to your set up correctly. will have proof either way soon-------bbo

here is the deal.. you are better off getting one built to your combo and intended use. yes it will cost a little more but in the end you will be a lot happier. so if it takes a few more months of saving money just do it.

dynamic- http://dynamicconverters.com/
ptc- http://www.ptcrace.com/
ultimate- http://www.ultimateconverter.com/

are the companies i would talk to. have heard nothing but good about all three of those companies. i had a 9 1/2" dynamic in my dart and it was freaking awesome. around town it drove like a stock converter but at the track it felt like you were getting shot out of a cannon when it launched. it flashed to 3800rpm and still felt stock on the street.

the biggest thing is to be 100% honest about your combo and intended use. if you are not you are not going to be happy.

famous bob - let me know when you find out.
joe - being honest about the combination makes sense, I do want something that works well with what I have, if I keep hearing that the "off the shelf" stuff won't make me happy I will start calling around after I have some $$$ saved up.

Again, thank you all for the information, it is much appreciated.

:prayer:

its possible that you find one off the shelf that will match your combo. but for me after seeing what a custom one did for my car i would never buy off the shelf again. i'd pick up ot at work, cut spending all over the place until i had the money for one built to my combo. infact i had three friends buy converters after i let them drive my car with the new converter. they all drove it with the old converter too..
