I put 12v to the field wire from the VR side, and watched at idle as the battery voltage climbed to 13v, and then checked the alternator output and it was about 13.5v at idle.
Another issue I've got is my starter really doesn't like to work, spent an hour trying to get it started again, to no avail.
At least I know my alternator works. I figured I could test my VR by connected a jumper from battery positive to the ignition side while running, so if I can get it started again I'll test that. That'd be unfortunate for a new VR and my old VR to both be bad.
