67/68/69 cuda dilemma

Yeah I'm a bit of a slow poke. One head installed today. I'm really liking the ARP head bolt kit I picked up off Fabo for this engine project a few years ago. Really schweet fasteners. Gonna port match head #2 tomorrow morning and go ahead and install it. Then install the valvetrain and put the intake manifold on.

Second head is done. One of the things I did on these heads was remove the casting flash where the oil return is from the heads. I also removed the bump outs between the intake ports where the valve cover bolts fit, and opened up the pinch in each runner where the pushrod tubes are. I'm sure that small raised lip at the oil return is ok on a stock engine, but I dont want any impedance at all to the flow of oil returning to the oil pan. It's small things like this that add up. Heres some other pix of the return holes in the lifter valley. This all helps for an efficient oil return to the pan.

I removed the china wall gaskets front and back, and set the intake on with the fel pro gaskets, and threaded in 4 intake bolts by hand "no wrench". One at each corner. Then checked with a portable borescope I have that plugs into my phone. Everything lines up really good. I was just looking at it all wrong yesterday. I will do a trim to fit on the port holes on the gaskets. I also dont like the idea of filling the intake manifold gap with a glob of silicone. I have thinner cork sheet and will make a thinner set of these. Heres a couple pix I took. I checked all 8 holes.

i wouldn't be put of using a bead of silicon on the china walls, even most 'rebuild' books suggest using it instead of the cork gaskets and they're written by smarter folks than most of us :thumbsup: . if the cork sheet you have isn't thick enough to compress properly it will leak. even the stock thick cork seals compress a surprising amount, have you tried a dry build to see if they compress enough for the intake to seat correctly at the heads?

Yes a lot of newer engines are built with only silicon
I like ultra gray
But some of the best is mopar....if you want to stay true to the brand
 
This part is done. Only thing left is the 200 inch lbs for the rocker shaft bolts. I converted this to to foot lbs' however, my ft lb torque wrench doesnt go down low enough. Gonna just borrow one.

Just gonna go with the thick bead of RTV and roll with it.
 
Just a quick mockup to see how it's going to look. I decided to buy new Elgin rocker arms and rocker shafts, instead of using the old parts. Want to start out with zero wear. I have a set of stock 69 valve covers I may use instead of the chrome proform ones. Trying to keep it looking stock. I was looking into the mopar turquoise engine paint sold through Eastwood. I think it comes as a pint. Need to figure out what primer is needed under it. And what to thin it with to spray it on. Rocker arms and shafts due to arrive on Monday. I go back on shift on Tuesday. If they arrive early enough, I will clean and install them.

My Elgin rocker arms and rocker shafts kit came in yesterday. The arms are made in USA, but the rocker shafts are made in China. Not sure I want to trust them. My original rocker shafts had a small amount of wear and one had some grooving in it. So I wanted to start off new. Anybody else have experience good or bad with these? I can only assume that these were manufactured to Elgins or OEM specifications.

The rockers are made in USA, I can weigh on a scale. Elgin is an OEM supplier to the auto industry. I wouldent be surprised if they have been stamping these out since 1956 for A engines. Steve, it came as a kit LH, and RH rockers, and the shafts all in one kit.
 
This is the dumbest **** I have ever seen. Had to change a battery in my wifes 2015 impala this morning . $303 out the door for an AGM battery that's damn near semi truck sized. Lookit all the bullshit I had to remove just to get it outta there. The worst is the water and dust cover that was likely cracked from her last accident, broke all the way on removal. I ended up melting it back together with my soldering iron. I knew it was on it's way out when the touch screen started doing really wierd ****. Damn new cars. At least my 2022 maverick battery is still simple like the older ones.

Thanks. I taped it on the inside and melted it by grooving into it. Then peeled the tape and melted into the length of the crack on the inside. Then put the iron flat down the length on the outside to fill in the groove I made melting it together. Last thing I did was trim the edges with a utility knife. It did turn out pretty good and it was fixed pretty quick for just thinking on the fly.

That set up looks like the one in my Sprinter based RV......Even the battery looks the same

All the stuff packed in the rr quarter
That you need to lift around and over the hole they hide it in
Its almost like you need a cherry picker
 
Electronics! Ha,,,We are so old and out of date, we have never touched the touch screen in our daily, or turned on its radio, in our daily 2014 Toyota Tacoma little truck. But! the wife has a cell for GPS and other BS! Attached to her elbow...it seems forever ! :thumbsup: :BangHead:

Oh dont get me wrong, I absolutely love the Sync setup on my 22 Maverick. Super handy. It's like an extension of my phone. I plug the phone in and never have to look at it. Push the talk button on the steering wheel and just tell it to call, text, or if I need directions. So there are lots of pluses to the tech. The negatives are the cost of the parts when it breaks, and being bent over by the dealership with the labor. This is why I love old cars. Easier to work on. I can do it myself, and the parts dont cost an arm and a leg compared to new stuff.

Not worth it to me. I'll pass on the tech to avoid the "negatives" that you cited. As a matter of fact, I will normally pass on a newer car if it is a "higher end" model. Give me the basics, and I am happy.

That's the great thing about the Sync system, you dont take your eyes off the road. With my phone plugged in, I just touch a button on the steering wheel, and say "call my wife" and it calls her. I talk while driving, and when done tell it to end call, and it hangs up. Ditto for any texting. I just talk, it repeats it back to verify what I ssid was ok, then asks if I want to send it. I never take my eyes off the road. The truck is an extension of my phone. When on road trips, I even touch the steering wheel button and ask what restaurants, motels, gas stations are near to me, and it tells me the information. Again no eyes off the road.
