Hi all, after responding and posting pics of my 68 Barracuda on other threads, I was encouraged to start my own. So here I am. My first car I ever owned was a 67 Dart GT. I always wanted another A body mopar. I do have a 68 Coronet 500 with big block, so I wanted a more daily driver with a fun street engine. I bought this lifetime South Carolina car in early Aug.2024. As the first picture will show I received it on August 18th via transport truck. It came with 2 full books of its lifetime documentation, which eventually sold be on the car. It’s a 3 owner car with original bill of sale, full build sheet and much much more that I will cover as I go. It was a late model 68 and sold originally on October 1,1968. With a documented trade in of a 61,Valient V-200 hard top coupe. It came new with a long list of options, including the “ spring sport special” the first set of photos will show it as I received it, and photo of original sales receipt. Also sported original wheel covers. More to come..

The car is very original in many ways, it has had a paint job and new top. The mileage has also been documented as original along the way, with it having 104,000 on it when I bought it. Even though 68’s didn’t have date stamps on block intake was stamped as June 68. Stock 2 barrel. Original tag is intact as photos will show. It was sold new in Avocado green, white vinyl top, side pin striping. Shown the original top with hole in it, the pin striping ( look close). And the fender tag. A generous guy on B bodies decoded it for me. When it showed up there was a few issues, house paint over spray, 4 wheel drum breaks ( kinda worked) but for the most part everything was as described.. I put around 400 miles on it the first 6 weeks.. it ran… ok single exhaust, but was what I expected out of a 318. I loved that it came new with sure grip 8 3/4 rear end and it still sports that today. The right rear brake was getting hot as hell. First thought was axle bearing. Replaced both sides. Still got hot. I found an old boy locally that had a brake shoe truing machine took him the drums and shoes. He matched them up and they have been fine since. I had it clay barred and waxed by a detail shop, and that totally removed all the overspray. It was repainted in a close to original metal flake avocado green in 2001, with Emron paint. It has some close up issues, but very presentable. And as I said, I want to drive it.. had a few critter nests to take care of but still sports original carpet and even floor mat. As you can see by the engine bay, it’s still very simple and original. One thing I did notice was valve covers are 69, but I do know that it was common in late year models to do that.. I did add a battery cut off, an radiator overflow tank but otherwise original. Also paint under the hood is original including the glorious paint runs on passenger firewall and passenger fender..

Although I really liked the 14” original wheels , they had set probably flat for quite a while at one time, and had thin rusty spots on all wheels in one place where they had set in/ on the ground. So I Bucked up for some 15” small bolt pattern cragers and new tires.. it still want running great. It was sporting a china aftermarket 2 barrel . In a parts run was the original 2 barrel. I bought a rebuild kit and rebuilt the original and reinstalled that . It instantly ran better… kinda . It was intermittent. Ran great for a bit, then would sputter and miss. I did find a vacume leak and it had several oil leaks. ( filter adaptor) and I was noticing an occasional antifreeze drip back between the engine and transmission. ☹️ I pulled the intake , replaced gaskets, valve cover gaskets , rebuilt oil filter adapter. All helped but did not solve all the issues.. more to come

Welcome, great story and nice fish!

Hopefully that was a rain puddle under the car and not something leaking (photos in the first set)?

Nice catch! Notchbacks always remind me of a horny cat trying to raise it's *** in the air lol. I knew Spring Special came with chromed grills but didn't realize there was much more. Very cool! Cragars suit it perfectly!

One of the biggest differences in upgrades I did to my B body was sway bars front and rear and Bilsteins all around.. I spent most of September and part of October enjoying the car and decided to do these upgrades. I did install firm feel sway bars.. (probably didn’t need rear). Upon inspection I saw that KYBs had been installed when it was restored in 2001. Although they were 25 yrs old, they had less than 10k miles in them, so for now, I left them. I am fortunate enough that Inhave a friend that happens to have a mopar Utube channel that isn’t that far away. ( well 3 hours) anyway, we had discussed mild performance upgrades and made a plan. I was to buy all the parts put them in the trunk, then take the Barracuda down to him for a few days and he would install them do some “ hot rod” stuff and have it back in a week or two.. this is where things took a turn. I bought an Edelbrock performer intake, a new 650 avs2 carb, a pertronix distributor, new timing chain and gears, roller rockers, had a cam ground for it, new 4 bbl air cleaner . The plan was, I wanted to retain the manifolds.. I didn’t want to mess with headers in an A body, I wanted a fun daily driver. Remember I have a Roudy big block 440 with headers in my B body. I trailer the car down to him and…. The fun began. He started under the hood removing intake, water pump, timing chain and gears to access the cam. Raised the car to do something.. not sure exactly what and he spotted anti freeze dripping where I mentioned earlier. I figured it was dripping out the over flow hose which is why I added the overflow tank. Well that wasn’t were it was coming from .. the rear water jacket plugs plugs were leaking! Great, while he was into it that far, decided to go ahead and pull the motor. The transmission shift seal was leaking as well so decided to pull it at the same time. The plan was to pull the heads and port match them to intake and exhaust manifolds , so he separated them and put on engine stand. It got even better.. as he pulled the heads he found that it sported only 1 of the original ‘68 318 heads, the other was a 67 .243 closed chamber head. So the compression was different side to side, then he checked the play in the crank and found it unacceptable. So, now the lower end needed attention. When he pulled the pan he found the center thrust bearing cap seemed loose. The bolts were tight! Ends up he figured it was a factory issue and the bearing had been “walking”. It did a small amount of damage to the crank in that area as well. So out comes the pistons.. keep in. Mind I have put around 700 miles on this engine since I bought it. Now he finds 4 broken top rings. Now the machine shop was necessary! I will leave this here for now.. I will get back to you later this evening…

Here where the haters will hate.. lol. Block went to the machine shop. It only needed .20 over bore, crank .10/.10.. I bought new flat top taller pistons, I bought a set of closed chamber .273 heads from rat rod Al on this forum.. Jamie, ported the heads reground valves. We are going for port velocity, and quench! I will update when the build starts here in a couple weeks. In the meantime time, I did a front disc brake conversion, added QA1 upper control arms, replaced lower control arm bushings. Also I had some issues with my dash gauges. Thinking the volt limiter in the fuel gauge was bad, I feared the worst and bought replacement ones.. after inspection, found out that wasn’t the issue. So fixed those, and installed factory tach in dash which is cool as hell! Love that! So I will have dash gauges available for sale if someone needs any!! So you all are up to date at this point .. hoping to have it on the road by mid to end of March!

Great job! Looks awesome. Brakes and dash look great. One thing(if i may), is the tach is repop. Still looks great just hope you didn't get soaked $$$.
It is a repop. As you can see by the bright needle color comparison. But I paid $150 for it.. which is what an exterior costs in many cases. So I don’t feel it was too big of a chance to take.. I had a vacume gauge I could have installed , but I really wanted the tachometer..

I hear ya with the tach and you got a deal! Looks great and yeah it's better than vac gauge. Nice work!

Looks great. Well preserved car!
The tag shows a 2.76 open rear axle.
Scheduled build date A10 October 10, 1967

Sharp eyes on the schedule production date of October 10, 1967. The car was sold almost one year later (Oct 1, ‘68) so it must have sat around for a long time; maybe was a demo model? I know the A10 is when it was scheduled so it might not have been built on that day but to be actually built almost a year later would be odd? What the connection with the last 6 digits of the VIN in 1968? I know in later years there was a connection but in 68 were they using sale order numbers instead of VIN’s?

Sorry my bad I posted the wrong tag picture . Thanks for catching that.

Sweet car sir! Your tale matches mine. It seems like every car I work on needs something minor done. But then when fixing that someting else is broken or worn out, which leads to........well you know. Keep up the good work. Luvs me some notchbacks!
