all this means to me is when I get it to the shop I can probably expect more "hidden" damage.

Hummm, It may have had some work on that rear and pulled, But I have seen similar damage from a car being yanked out of the ditch as well. Guys just put the tow hook into whatever they can.
I would think that if they needed to pull on the rear for frame rails you would have possible 1/4 and trunk alignment issues or at least some clues as to if there ever was.
