Been working on my 70 swinger for a few months now. Haven't really publicized this build. I figured you guys might enjoy a few car **** pictures. I am pretty satisfied with the 440 install, although it looks like it is almost a tad bit "crooked" in there.... is that normal? I mean, I guess that is what U-joints are for. Just wanted to make sure. Also, what kind of radiator would you guys recommend? I am looking to use one out of a truck or something. Doesn't have to be a mopar radiator. I am also looking at electric fans. I have been reading alot about how ford Taurus fans are pretty popular. Anyone want to chime in? Also, what is everyones two cents on header back exhaust? I am new to the big block world and I am using the Schumacher swap headers. What does everyone think about the "best sounding" exhaust for this?

Thanks, Dakota

P.S. - The last picture is a teaser for a near future build.

If it sits slightly closer (about an inch I think) to the passenger side of the car and if it sits level from side to side it should be good to go. If you used the Schumacher engine swap mounts you should be fine.

If you haven't already done it, you will want to add subframe connectors so you don't twist the body up, and if it has the 7 1/4" rearend you will want to swap that out as well, the 8 3/4 is the preferred unit.

Your choice of exhaust will depend on the engine setup and intended use of the car. Is it a stock 440 with aftermarket intake, or have you thrown a bunch of performance internals in it? Street only? Street/Strip? Race only?

If you only care about the way the exhaust sounds, the choice will be based on your personal preference, what do you want it to sound like? I personally like mine to rumble, not the sort of raspy sound you get from Flowmasters.

DK - Nice build, how mine started:

Headers - The schumackers worked well, little small on the ports and tubes but they fit nice. I used flowmaster 40's at first, worked nice but liked the sleeper look and the 40's made people look for the hot rod and dismiss my Dart until it passed them.

Cooling - Find the biggest radiator you can fit, use a shroud and and 7 blade. One of the issues I had when I first built mine was cooling. The distance between the radiator and the fan is an issue at times for these builds. I used a C body 4 core, shroud etc, had clearance issues.

Disc brakes up front - Not sure if this was a / slant to start with, mine was. I did a low cost quick disc brake swap, used all the /6 suspension stuff, no issues to include the small rear end. Once you start getting traction or being ruff on it, you will have issues, but at first was fine and fun.

Mine has changed a lot since I first started and I have some things I would have done differently, but my direction changed once I began to love the car. I started off with a cool cruiser and then went to 11's street car - pick your direction, if not you will be doing things twice like me.

BTW - I swapped to TTI's later for HP, I have some video's under my for sale thread.

And as for the Taurus fan, you may have a space issue, so be prepared to cut/chop modify. And in my opinion, as you stated any radiator will work, just get a big one. Cooling for me was an issue, and from my research an issue for many

Hey thanks cazbah! Lots of good info. To be quite honest I wouldn't mind hitting the track with this car a couple times, but by no means am I purposefully building an 11 sec drag car...

I took a 4 core radiator in on a trade that was previously in a different dart. 72 maybe? Dunno, but it works and it's cheap.

I installed a single electric fan that I believe is a 1600 cfm? Not sure, but I have it installed in from of the radiator as a pusher (not a puller). Also taken in on a trade.

A lot of my build has been a barter, literally. To be quite honest I probably have like 2k in my power train.

Motor is a .30 over 440 zero deck with flat tops. Crank that's been turned 20. Heads are 516? Ported polished by yours truly. Cam is a purple cam with .529 of ACTUAL lift, not sure on duration. Had the heads milled a little I believe .10 and had springs installed as I'm not good at installing them based on install height.

Intake is a lightly massaged dual plane weiand intake with a massaged 750 eddy on it.

Tranny is a built 727.

Rear end is going to be a STOCK Ford 8.8 373's and a limited slip.

Brakes are disc's swapped in from a 73 duster and I have on order a set of dual piston calipers offered for a 71 duster by rock auto.

Right now I'm just in the process of figuring out some of the wiring. Previous to breaking into the system I had power on both sides of the coil. Bypassed the amp meter and I'm still having the same issue. Right now I'm at a standstill until I get more information from someone who has had the same problem.

Read on the forum somewhere that maybe it's an ignition switch?

DK - sounds like its going to be fun build. Let me know how the cooling system works, I always like to hear how people cooled their beast. As for wiring - I know enough to get me in trouble, so I am not help.

Also, dosnt the 8.8 come with disc, that was one of the enticing points in my opinion about one.

Mine came out of a 2000 Ford Explorer. It's got 373s limited slip with 12 inch disc brakes. I like it alot.

DK - very cool, and I do like the idea of an 8.8 with all the features. Definitely a very good way to go. Keep posting please, very cool build.

I'm sending off my 8.8 with a friend tomorrow to have one of the axle housings cut down to center the diff. Just have to aquire a spare passenger side axle and have my drive shaft shortened. They make a swap u joint to accommodate an 8.8. Any part #'s anyone?
