I just finished pulling out the 318 in my 70 swinger and the power steering line was not a screw in type high pressure hose. It just had the spring compression clamps on a piece of power steering hose at both ends. Is this a factory configuration or did PO do a hack job. I thought the power steering was a high pressure line?

power steering has 2 hoses. One is high pressure and will need proper fittings or it will leak. The other is return and clamps are fine there.

Thanks Redfish. It's been so long since I've had a car with power steering I forgot about the pressure and return side. I guess I need to clean a couple more inches of dirt and gunk out before the pressure line is exposed. Thanks alot.

Well, the pressure and return seemed like a logical explenation but, It is not going to work for me. The power steering pump has one hose coming out of it and that's it. I think all the work is done inside the power steering unit and the pump just suppies the fluid. So I am going to assume it is a lower pressure line.

That is not posible, The preasure line is probally missing. look at the bottom of your pump it should have a big ,1" wrench size nut and a High preasure hose screws in the middle. It then goes to the very top of the box. There is a return line thet attaches to a nipple on the pump and one on the box.

The PS system has to have two hoses into the steering gear and the pump. The pump has a high pressure fitting that is threaded and another tube that is flared like the ones on the radiator only a lot smaller. This is the low pressure tube. On the Federal-Mogul pump the low pressure tube has a 90 degree bend in it. If you manage to find a complete cop car pump, it will have a double pass cooler (about 4" long) on the low pressure side.
