I am helping my sister try to gather up what all would be needed to do a 5.7 or 6.4 swap into her 72 Dart. Currently a 318/904 with an 8 3/4 rear. Transmission is a big question. Yes, can go with a 727, but would be really nice to have OD. We would also like to keep from modifying the tunnel, so that might keep our options low. Gear Vendors on a 727? Or GM 4L60? Do those fit without modification? If we keep the stock front suspension, can you run headers or is clearance an issue? I know there are kits with unlocked computer and harness. I will take any advice you all can give so we can get a rough idea of cost.
Thank you so much for guidance!

I have no experience with the overdrive options. You can use the 904 or a 727. The stock suspension with headers is tight. You'll be limited to stock manual steering box with the big tube tti. A Borgeson may clear with smaller tube(1 3/4), maybe someone can chine in on that one. As for electronics, do you want infinite adjustment, or just something to plug and play and go? For the plug and play, I have had fantastic experience with hotwireauto.com.

The driver side header is a tight fit on my 71 Demon. I went with the 1 3/4" Tti headers on the 5.7 and I actually have to remove the torsion bar to get that header in/out. The passenger side fits great with no issues. I have a built 727 and was going to do an overdrive swap but didn't want to mess with the tunnel mods. From what I understand, the Gear Vendors only require a little hammer work in the tunnel for clearance. I would like to do a GV but they aren't cheap and the driveline will need to be shortened. Currently I have 4.10 gears in the car with a 26" tall tire and the rpm's are 3400 @ 65 mph. I plan on going to a 285/70-15 tire which will drop the rpm to about 2900 and with a GV it would drop to about 2300 rpm @ 65.

If you don't want to modify the tunnel, just run a 2.76 or 3.23 rear gear with a 727 or 904. That's the cheapest option.

And a 999 with a 2.74 first gear and a 2.76 would feel like a standard 904/727 with a 3.23 out of the hole while 60mph with a 26' tire would be like 2200 rpm. Not a bad option for a cruiser.
