Which would be the base differential to come from the factory behind the 318 with A/T on a '72 Scamp? Would it be a 7.25? And probably what ratio? Open rear?

Could have come with that rear end. Probably a peg leg with 2.76/2.96 gears.

On the rear covers attaching bolts up top slightly on the right side is normally a tag with the gear ratio stamped on it.
While your there, take a photo of the rear end.

Mopar rear axles. My 70 318 car had a 8 3/4. According to the chart, it could have any one of the first 3.

On a 318 A body, usually someone, the buyer or the dealer, would have to order an 8 3/4.

318's came with 7 1/4" axles up to 72, but you could option an 8 3/4" and it also came with the trailer tow package...

My 67 Barracuda formula S had the factory trailer tow and came with an 8 3/4" 3.23 gear...

I had a 70 swinger that had a factory 8 3/4" 2.76 open gear, but it wasn't listed on the window sticker for some reason...

I'm not sure about the 73 and later came with 7 1/4"....

7.25 with a 2.76 open would be the base and most common rear end. But now and then you could find a sure grip or 8.75 under them

I had an original 38000 mile 74 valiant 4 door and it, unfortunately, came with a 2.76 open 7 1/4.

51 years after rolling off a dealership lot it could have anything in it now. Best to post a photo of it and we can help identify what type of rear end it has. As for the ratio, that might be more difficult if there’s either no tag on it or, even if it has a tag, 51 years later the actual gears might have been changed and the tag left.

I hate the 7 1/4" axle... I broke 3 of them with a mild 318 with a 4bbl and dual exhaust and 340 cam, then replaced it with an 8 3/4" and never broke another axle....

I broke the original 7-1/4 in my 90 Dakota, replaced it with an 8-1/4.
Back when I ripped apart my volare I had 4, 7-1/4 rear ends sitting here. I couldn't give them away for $25 each,so I actually offered them for free and still no takers. I ended up hauling all of them across the scale for scrap. They were all working functional rear ends. Later my mom had a 5th avenue which blew it's 7-1/4 and for how Mom drove a lawnmower rear end shouldn't have blown in anything she drove. I put an 8-1/4 in there as well .... Only one I could find at that time was a hideous 2.45 gear ... Yet it was a sure grip at that.
Later again and I had (2) police issue diplomats. Both were 2.94. not great but definitely noticeably better than 2.45.
In between the diplomats I had an 87 B 250 can
It took had a 2.94, 8-1/4. In it. I never had a minute's problem with any of those 8-1/4s
