Which is better? Or are they pretty much just as competent? I currently have a 904 with a shift kit in my 74 Dart and man, that tranny is solid.

904 is a good tranny.727 is a bit stronger but if your not beating a 904 on a daily basis it will hold up fine.

Properly prepped a 904 is as good as it gets, thats what i run behind my stroker and its held up very nicely, considering all the wheels up launches i have on it..

if someone goes through a 904 that knows what they are doing and uses good parts then a 904 will take all the abuse to can give it. it doesn't take alot of money either like some lead you to believe... just good poarts and someone that knows what they are doing... the 904 has been in my car for quite a few years now and i beat the crap out of it every chance i get, djvcuda is running a 904 and he beats the hell out of that 904 a friend running 11.50's in a 72 cuda has over 1000 runs and god knows how many street miles on his 904. all three were built by the same guy. a local guy that does it on the side. none of them have anything exptic in them. just built right and with quality parts.

and on top of that a 904 is lighter and takes less power to spin it so its good for atleast tenth in the quarter .

do yourself a favor and go with the 904. leave that heavy thing for the old school thinking guys.

The 727 is a tad more than a "bit" stronger .. !!

But the racers can get them to live fairly behind a Hemi in a SS Dart or Cuda - so any motor that most people here would build - so ...

No problemO !

The 727 is quite a bit stronger trans. in stock form that's why they use them behind big blocks. But to make them stronger the rotating mass is more so the trans. uses up a little more hp (12-14 hp if I remember right) to spin it and it weighs more.

Sounds like your 904 is just fine for your application by the way you describe it and as joe said it's a little lighter so will probably make your car a little quicker.

Also since it's in a A-body and it's smaller you have a little more working room around it.

A 727 is a stronger trans that is why they put them in trucks and even behind /6's. But a properly prepped 904 can be an excellent trans in a small block application and even some big block guys run them. If I had it to do over I would have used a 904 in my drag car.

I have heard that someone is offering an adapter to put a SB 904 behind a B engine. If it is priced right - I think that they might be able to sell quite a few of them.
