727 pump seal ring thingies

Hey at least you found the problem and it wasn’t the trans.

Looks like it’s cracked at the weld. Not just coan has that problem. Why? I don’t know
Sure as I expected it’s leaking at the joint. My CRT converter is welded all through there. Looks like Coan got lazy and didn’t do it 100%.

Had a bad leak from the front of my 727, so I pulled the pump out to reseal it, and the little finger clip on one of these rings is broken. There’s two that are on the back side of the pump that goes into the drum. Any idea where I can find them? I may have to seal them out of my other 727 for now.

Also, any way to tell if a pump is going bad? Seems of a seal starts leaking usually there’s some other cause to the problem. The transmission was fresh in 3/2023, so it shouldn’t been worn much.

I’d like to just do a pump reseal kit, but don’t want to be doing this job again in a week.

I've bought the seal kit(cast iron rings) on ebay before .

Perhaps you can get an expanding pipe test plug from the plumbing supply house and install a Schrader valve, then charge it with air or nitrogen and dish-soap/water up the weld and check for bubbles.

While it sucks you had to pull it again, at least you know what the problem is. I’ve been there before, many times, for other reasons, and I like to think of it as tuition. I can pull a 727 out of a 70 Dart like no bodies business!

Now that I’ve mastered that skill, I’ve hadn’t had to do it again. And tomorrow, like clockwork, it will drop parts on the floor when I pull it out the garage:p

Out isn’t so bad. Going back in seems to take twice as long. It would be nice to have a lift and transmission jack.

Happy you found the problem. I’d send that converter to Abruzzi and they will fix it. They’re top shelf and turn things around quick for racers in need.

I had a good friend of mine who builds hot rods professionally tig the shaft. At the end of the season I’ll probably send it off somewhere to be checked and redone.

I hate that you’re right. Pulled it out again, and I have a suspicion this Coan converter isn’t welded adequately and is leaking.

A rag stuffed in the end with an air hose confirmed I had a similar crack and leak on a 10" TCI converter about 33 years ago. Sent it back, got it welded, and off I went again.
