727 tailshaft counterweight

Simple question... What is the weight on the end of the 727 for? I took the one that was on my transmission off when I put the motor/trans in the car. Is it needed? Thanks!

It's a counter balancer of sorts to absorb output shaft harmonic vibrations.
Not usually a big deal to take it off.
