Hello!
Just bought this car - 1974 Duster with a 340 installed.

I'm woundering what the biggest rear tire I can fit without any mods, or significant change in gas/speedometer, rubbing etc...

Also what tire brand are reasonably cheap?

Also, was thinking about getting new rims (leaning towards crager classic chrome) - however I might just re chrome (ie make the whole existing rim chrome) what do you think?

Thanks!

Those are 14" factory wheels, right?

My favorite tire brand is MT. I like their stuff and the price is right.

So to answer your original question.

Yes, buy new wheels. 15" standard wheels or bigger. This will kill 2 birds with one stone for you. You'll need new wheels that fit proper in the wheel well and properly sizes for the bigger tires.

As far as the actual width tire that will fit... I know for a standard dart they will take 9.65" section width. Yours will take a touch more. So I'd shoot for a 10.50 section width. That will allow a mickey Thompson 26x10.50 sportsman pro tire.

Here is my car with 10.50" section width tires under it. I needed offset shackles to do it and there was no more room for anything bigger. But I have a 69 dart. You have a little more room.

I have 245/60/15 on a 8 inch wheel. I love the Cragers. You can go bigger, but they don't really fit right in my opinion. You have to measure your back spacing right. You can move the rim to the outside with the back spacing. Your car looks like it has something close to that now.

That tire in the above pic is a 275/60/15.

I'd bet almost anything that would fit on your car with the right wheel.

It would be worth it to put offset shackels on the car. Then the 275's fit for sure.
