putting an 8 3/4 together for the 1st time and had the 3rd member rebuilt. i have green bearings installed and wanted to know how to pry the old one off. and what lube should I use to assemble the new one and axles spines? It's my first time working on diffs

I have the proper tool now, but before that.........

I would insert a 1" pipe of a suitable length through the empty housing to knock one side out & then the other.

A flat end punch, hit repeatedly in one spot, being careful not to mar the housing i.d. Should deform and eventually turn sideways.

Are you asking how to remove the inner seal?
Working from bearing / brake end of the housing, Insert the splined end of the axel into the seal and you can pop the inner seal free.
When driving in the new seal be sure to get it in flush to the stop.
I put a thin coat of synthetic grease on the splines prior to assembly, but I don’t know if that is even necessary, as when the Diff is filled the splines will get lubricated.

That's how I do it. 1/2" electrical conduit about 4 1/2 to 5 feet long. Knock out the left from the right end, and vice versa.

That exactly how I always done it, unbolt the axle and on the way out push it sideways and the splines catch the seal and it pops right out every time.

I made a plug to knock in the new seals.

From the 'just because I can department' here is the actual puller mentioned in the FSM. The black end swivels for insertion, then is pushed flat so the back side engages the seal. Then tap-tap-tap with the slide hammer......

Chunk of fence post thru the center section. And a Claw Hammer. You know mixing carpentry tools and mechanic's tools. Is always a good idea! Lol
