I'm planning on using the 8.8 explorer rear in my A body know what years and codes will have Moser Axle do the work appears to be pretty cut and dry for anybody that has performed this swap any special tricks or what to look for as far as problems looks like to get the limited slip best chance is 3:73 from a V8 I prefer 3:55 but that can be changed
I think he is saying he "will have Moser Axle do the work"...? Punctuation would be nice. Understanding the question gets you more answers.
Yeah maybe so. God forbid I actually expect people to use proper punctuation like I do. You'd figure people needing help would actually try to make it easy for those they are asking to understand. I guess I'm askin too much.
Not all 8.8 s have 3.73 some are4.10 s some are open 3.55 the ones that are 3.73 /4.10 have 31 spline axles , the 3.55 have 28 spline, you can usually pick one up for around 200$ , keepin in mind you shorten long side tube and use short side axles in both sides, can run you a few bucks depending upon how deep you want to go .
Moser is about an hour from me I'll check with them on a questimate I'm sure they have done this many times
found this Ford Ranger 8.8-Inch Axle Versus Ford Explorer 8.8-Inch Axle All 8.8-Inch Ford Explorer axles use 31-spline axle shafts. All 8.8-Inch Ford Ranger axles use 28-spline axle shafts (except FX4 and FX4 Level II which use 31-splines). The Ford Ranger 28-spline 8.8-Inch axle tube is 2.80 inches in diameter. The Ford Ranger 31-spline 8.8-Inch axle tube is 3.25 inches in diameter. The Ford Explorer 31-spline 8.8-Inch axle tube is 3.25 inches in diameter.
What I did was just bought to whole rearends. I got them both for 200 bucks and had enough parts I could swap and borrow for each other. You will need 2 short side axles anyway. I got the 2nd rearend for less than the cost of a 2nd axle. The only thing extra I had to buy was bearings seals and a shim kit. And brakes of course
The earlier ranger 8.8 are an easier fit, but hard to find in my experience. The damn Explorer rear ends are everywhere. And they most all have trac-lok and disc brakes. If that matters.
8.8 is a great alternative if you can’t find a reasonable 8.75, I’m happy the way mine turned out. I have 3.27 gear in mine with open diff. I do have a new trac loc to install, if I ever get around to it. I bought two explorer axles just to grab the short axle out the other. Built one complete one and sold the other off. Here’s how I did mine with the help of others here on the forum. 67 Fastback getting 8.8 rear
There's description of doing a shortened version in my home thread if that interests you. Starts on page 6. Be careful of bent differentials. Many have been in rollovers. I would not have detected it without the alignment tool I made.
People here are very helpful but the people asking for help need to do it right. I see that I am not the only one here that has some standards. People will remember you when you are rude to them.
Standards my ass and yes MOST people on here are very good and knowledgeable --- except for a very few looks like most got what I was asking about
Thanks -- I was looking for some small details one being the flange the rest is pretty cut and dry -- good job
we all have our likes and dislikes that's what makes the world go around I like drums on the rear and see that the 91-94 Explorers came that way something to maul over
