Can someone tell me what the indentations at the rear of the pan are there for? I'm trying to put a new gasket on and every time I start to torque the bolts the gasket wants to squeeze out whet the indentation is. I used a rubber gasket and Versachem gasket shellac.

Yeah, I had about decided their only reason for being was to aggravate me.

I actually welded mine up! Made it straight. Ended up using a pan from a Durango with a filter extension and the gasket I mentioned. NO more leaks. MT

Could it be that your pan is not flat and you are inadvertently over-tightening those two screws? The gasket squeezes out because there is no pressure from the pan to retain it
If the pull-through on the bolt holes hasnt been repaired that will just make it worse. No gasket will seal until these issues have been addressed.

The "indentations" are stiffener ribs.On non-cork gaskets, they also act somewhat as labyrinth seals. When cork gaskets are used, the cork expands into these areas and locks the gasket to the pan.
