i replaced my front aluminum planetary with a steel set. before i took it apart i measured the end play at .025 but now the new steel front and all new thrust washers i have .047. is this going to an issue with .048 max or should i tighten it up. last question.073 for my direct is that enough clearance with a 5 clutch in a 4 clutch drum?

Clutch clearance is good where your at. The end play is within spec but Mopar spec is real wide and IMO you're much better off getting it tightened up as close to .020" as you can get it. The metal washer between the input and output shaft is the selective washer you change to get the clearance set where you want it

What year is the planetary, and what year is the mainshaft.
Somewhere in the late 70s or early 80s, they changed the design of the splines, and even tho the parts physically inter-fit, the splines have a different shape, and when/if you are unlucky enough to find this out it will because the M/S machined out the hub, and Zing you are walking. For this reason I always consider the m/s and the planetaries as a set. When it happened to me,it was an aluminum planetary from an early trans swapped into a later box, with the later m/s. You know I looked at those splines for a very long time with a magnifying glass, and could not see the difference. I threw the m/s out and went and installed a matched set, and it never happened again.

Not positive on 904's but it was in 76 they changed the spline angle in the 727's
