904 shifting problems

I have a problem with the 904 auto in the valiant. I brought the box 2 years ago as a unknown and when we pulled it apart for a reco to drop behind the 340 it had a shift kit fitted and a few other mods done to it, we freshened up the box and dropped it in and everything seemed fine until i pull the shifter into first gear when i change to second the box wont shift pull third still wont shift just stays in first? When i takeoff in drive the box shift's normally up and down....any suggestions what to look for?
 
I've done around 200 miles on the box with no problems, yesterday was the first time I tried shifting it through the gears manually. I had to stop put it in park, put it in drive then the box shifts normally again. I got under the car and to see if its selecting gears and all seems normal.

Or a screwup in the shift kit installation.
(first time it was manually shifted since the kit?)
Hard to tell for sure by the explanation.
 
It was the cable! We put a new one in and now it shifts great. Only thing is the selector bracket doesn't suit the shifter so i just need to order the right one.
