904 vs 727

And the big difference in my opinion... First gear ratios! 2.74 vs 2.45. Unless your making big power the 904 is the way to go in my book.

If he is making big power?
What’s big power #1

And #2, the 904 IS the way to go! Big power or not!

I’ll also say I won’t swap a 727 oh for a 904. Unless I was racing. Regular to mild hp street duty cars I wouldn’t give a crap.

Think this might help some people including me going to try to post a. Down load pic

Thanks for the Pics; that makes sense because when I had the orig 71 904 and the 81 904 on the shop floor the converters would not interchange and I had 3 different non lockup converters to try from. The 81 was already build so I used it.
Do you know if the input shaft is the only difference? If so, can I just change that or does the pump need changing also?

A non-lockup 904 is stronger because the input shaft on a lockup trans is drilled for fluid transfer to the lockup converter. Hughes converters also sell lockup torque converters and are very good converters. They might not be listed on Summit or JEG's website so you'd need to call them.

I think like 1980 they went to the lower first and second gear, depending on your rear ratio if you put the 727 in the car it could be a lot slower at take off, if you have your trans converted to a non lock up make sure you keep the lower gear set in the 904. My car ended up with 2.94 gears and in first gear its like 3.30 gears with the low gear set, then when it shifts into drive you got your highway gears. Webby.
