How do you identify these externally?
What years were they available?

[ame]http://www.mymopar.com/downloads/transguide.pdf[/ame]

this will tell you what year and car it came out of.....but nothing says it is a 998/999

Look on the side of the trans, above where the pan goes and there should be a series of numbers that you then find on the posted page. If its a 999 it will have a low first and second gear set.

And I think they became available in the mid to late 70s, Because I have a 999 in my dart, it came out of an 81 pickup, and the code on the side confirmed that it is indeed a 999, only problem is thats its a lockup trans...

Externally I dont know if they are much difference between a 904/998/999.

externally there is no difference .....along pan ridge will give you a part number....will not tell you if it is a 904...998..999 or anything else.

According to the link you put up once you have the code and know what the trans came out of it says heavy duty 904, 999 etc. My code was 4058398. I was wrong mine is from an 82 not an 81 one like I mentioned. The d150 part is for a 999 trans, opened it up to confirm as well.

there is nothing to gain with trying to find a 999 for the extra clutch disc....you can put 5 disc in a 4 disc drum....

only gain with 999 is the 1st gear 2.74....not all cars are faster with low gear set

I do know they came on Dodge diplomats as late as 1989. I'm sure they came in on other platforms in those years.
Maybe a 2wd Dakota? Maybe not. I dunno, not very savvy with dakotas (only old school Rams/Wagons sorry). But I also know that I've seen some on old dodge rams as well.

Look around for late 80's Diplomat with 318's is a good start (where I found mine in a salvage yard)

An A998 & an A999 will have these 2 ribs in the case above the rear servo. A 904 does not have them.

Cheers. Gaz

can someone tell me what a 998 is and what is a 998?

and how they differ from a 904?

Hot damn, I got both!
Here is another tidbit of info from Mr. Kunkel.
"...
A904G - This was a three front clutch, two rear clutch transmission used with Slant six cars. In 1980, the A-904G got the 2.74:1 first gear ratio and 1.54:1 second gear ratio. The 904 was later redesignated as the 32RH and the "2" is the rated torque capacity in hundreds of ft. lbs. (200 ft. lbs.)
A904LA - The A-904LA was used with the new LA 273 V8 engine.
A998 - The A998 was a four front clutch, three rear clutch transmission used in 318 2 barrel cars and had four or five clutches. The four clutch 998 had made it's first appearance in police car form in 1975 in the 360 2 barrell (Federal) Dodge Coronet. All 1981-1988 A998s had the 2.74:1 first gear ratio, 1.54:1 second gear ratio and a five clutch direct drum. A998 did not have the double wrap low & reverse band like the A999.
A999 - The A999 appeared in 1974 as a beefier small case transmission to put behind 360s. It was widely used in 360 equipped B-bodies and and C-bodies. It had a five disc front clutch pack, a three disc rear clutch pack, a 2.45:1 first gear ratio and a double wrap low & reverse band. A lockup version of the A999 appeared around 1980. Around 1981, the A999 got a 2.74:1 first gear ratio and 1.54:1 second gear ratio, along with all other 900-series Torqueflites. In 1984, the A999 appeared in 318 4 barrel equipped police cars, replacing the standard 727 transmission used before that time..."

I saw that too but wasn't sure If that was accurate.

NO, that's because it's not accurate, all 904's and 998's and 999's have the ribs cast into the case above the rear servo, the only ones that don't have the ribs are VERY early 904's with the small input shafts pre '67 I think mainly found behind 273's.

I did some more checking and find this to be true. So much for an easy way of spotting an A999
