There are adapters out there to adapt small block bell housings to big blocks. Is it possible to build one of these transmissions to live behind a mild 440 in a lighter street car that will never see slicks?

I want overdrive behind an automatic big block but want to keep it all Chrysler.

I think its J and W who make a racing bell for the 727 that bolts to the pump bolts. Same pattern on the 518. A stock 518 will hold up to a 440 just fine. There isnt really a good way to adapt a small block trans to a BB without sawing off part of the block due to the starter location difference.

jas0162 is right. Around 2004 we did a 518 (P5249166 if you can find one)with a JW conversion bell and stuck it behind a 500 CI big block.
Trans tunnel work is required and cross member. Also a 10'' converter will be needed as a stock converter will not fit inside the JW bell housing. It can be done. Would I do it again ? No. Silver State offers a good overdrive kit that works well and much easier to install.

I cannot advise you specifically, but remember, the "some years" Cummins used the same basic trans--which is a 727 in "old speak" behind the diesels. 47-48RE is "in reality" a beefed 46RH/ RE

Sure, A A500 is a tough tranny too.
Works as well as anything else.
