A 500 floor shift question

Does anyone know if you can use a factory floor shift and console(67 Dart) when you swap to the A500? I heard its not possible with the A 518,but can not find any info for the A 500 swap.

I do beileve you can do it easy. The O.D. is electrically operated on the early tranny's and computer operated on later ones. The A-500 is a 904 with the added on O.D. unit.
 
Thanks for the reply rumble. I wonder why you cant use the floorshift the the 518? It should be just like the 727 but with the OD added on,right?

For my application I think the 500 would be fine.Having the option to go with the 518 would be nice in case of future power increase,but aint nobody touching my console:naka:
 
Good question. Maybe a space issue with the OD section thats added on?
 
Must be. I wish I had one of each so I could measure and see for myself. Have you heard of any other members doing this swap? I keep searching,but I come up with nothing. I must be searching the wrong key words......
 
Here are a couple pics that might help I will be using a 500 but not with stock floor shifter so can't help there. I got these pics from Allpar.com Here is a site that sells the controls for the od to work automatically. I called and the kit works for 518 or 500 as long as it is the early model

i dont wanna jack the thread but can anyone direct me to a thread about the 518 swap or 500? and what cars you could find one in? thanks

Tyler- you are not jacking the thread,I would LOVE to see a thread about this swap.
 
The two major hurdles are building a crossmember and cutting the floor brace to clearance the od unit.
Once I see if my crossmember works I will make some copies for those who want to do the swap.
I believe 74Dartsport has a 518 in his and said all you have to do is cut the floor brace flat and then reinforce it with flat metal. I will be putting in frame connectors also as cutting that brace, which is attached to the t-bar mounts, will weaken the structural strength. Will probably do some other bracing as well. Once you get it in the kit to make the od work it is all automatic. (see above link) You must have the early 518 or 500 which is NOT controlled by a computer.
I don't know the year they started the computer controlled ones maybe some can jump in and let us know. Mine came out of a 90 truck, thought I had a 518 but took it to the tranny guy last weak and he looked at it and said that's a 500, won't be a problem as I will be right at 400hp and don't plan on going any higher with this car.

It helps greatly. I would be interested in your crossmember,since my welding skills are sub-par at best.

I found this old hot rod artical about swapping the 518 into a b body. It says you can run the floor shift with the 518,you just have to grind down an unused monting boss. I wonder if its the same for a bodies?

You know I have been looking into the 5.7 swap for a while now,and just decided against it.

I saw a set of the TTI mounts installed,and they just look to hookey to me. In my opinion the only way to do the swap right is with the Alter-k-tion. Dont get me wrong, Bill is an awesome guy,and his products are THE ****,but the price is insane. My dart is my daily driver,and I need some power.But I cant wait the 30 years it would take me to save up for the alterk,hemi,trans,wiring...etc... the list goes on and on and gets more expensive!

For 1/5 of the price I can pick up a low miles 5.9 with all of the wiring I would need to run the factory fuel injection,AND a 500 or 518 trans.And the 5.9 basically DROPS in like stock! Then I get FI,modern a/c compressor,high amp alt,power steering,and a serpintine belt system. While its in and putting a smile on my face, I can save up for a stroker kit,and aftermarket Fuel Management system,and shut the HEMI down!

Im really getting sick of being raced on by EVERY toyota truck the sees my car.I know rumble knows my pain with the stock 1 bbl. slant:-D Not to mention this camaro with an 'all aluminum 400 BBC(I never heard of a 400 chev???) race motor.Thinks he is the ****,I want to shut him down bad(at the track of coarse) Everytime me and the wife go to Carlsbad Beach,he is there asking everyone if they want to race. One time he saw the Dart,and asked if I felt lucky,I told him his POS chevy was not worth the gas my slant six would waste.About 15 of his friends busted out laughing,while he jumped in his crap mobile all red in the face,did a big burnout,stalled,and drove off.


Sorry for the rant,but my Mopar needs some Muscle!
