A body 8 3/4" u bolt question

-
I knew that was coming. Who cares? How is the rear end gonna go anywhere? As long as somebody ain't STUPID and doesn't over torque the nuts, there's no way in hades to crush the rear end housing at 45 foot pounds. Ain't happenin. I don't know why people make such a big deal about the flats on the u bolts. I've seen factory cars without them. They used both. If it was so danged important, that's the only style anybody wouldda ever made.
It's a legitimate question, and you can shove your continued condescending attitude where the sun don't shine. How's that?

I don't see where I was condescending at all. I certainly didn't mean it that way. The point I'm trying to make is, it doesn't amount to a hill of beans whether the u bolts are flat or round. It's impossible for the rear axle housing to move. And as long as someone is SMART and not a dumbass, you won't crush the axle tube. Since YOU aren't a dumbass, how is that condescending?

lol, that's great but there are folks here who don't know that difference and everything is a learning curve to apply things properly with the whys and how comes. Thanks

I wasn't being condescending to anyone intentionally but I'll say this. If somebody is dipshit enough to crush an axle tube tightening down u bolts, they just did somethin stupid.

Oh and can I pull it outta my *** now?

I had a 8 3/4 where you could see the outline of the round U bolt in the outside and the impression of where the U bolt crushed the stamped steel tube on the inside.

Its all point load, the flat distributes the load over a larger surface area where as the round ones distribute it over a VERY small surface area.

Remember the 8 3/4 is a stamped / formed sheet steel housing, it is not thick steel tubing like Dana 60 and 7 1/4

As long as somebody ain't STUPID and doesn't over torque the nuts
But that requires the use of a torque wrench and some people believe in their calibrated arms!

What's that?
If your wealthy, I'll adopt you and you can care for me and my cars

Go down to Napa and get some new ones.
Get yours where I get mine. lol
Having the Pentastar on the bolt adds 100% to the cost and nothing more of value.

I just came back from napa and took one of mine with. They claim they don't carry anything like that. They didn't even have the nuts. Do you have a link to them or the part number?

Thanks,I'm believe you're right, but was just curious is there's an exact 'factory spec" length.
Yeah. It's however long they need to be, just like @junkyardhero told you in post #36. So here's why that is. Whatever springs your car has may be a thicker or thinner spring pack than another car, resulting in the need for a different length u bolt. Get it? There's no blanket answer, as different suspension packages likely had the need for different length u bolts. Lose sleep over something worth losin it over.

i recently bought a set from AMK, They offer 2 sizes if i remember correctly and they have the flat spots for the tube.
good luck with your project...Rich

Do you have a part number? That site is hard to navigate for me.

Funny. Even for use with Cal Tracs where the tires will bite the FRIG outta the pavement, there's no hash marks and no flats on the u bolts. = NOT important. lol
