Considering dropping a 5.2or possibly 5.9Magnum into my Duster and i think i have most isues covered but here are the few details i have not yet found answers to.

Can i put a LA cam (without bolting on the fuelpumpdrive)in a Magnum engine running the Magnum timingcover without isues?

LA intake manifold to Magnum waterpump bypass hose are there any known solutions to this ? considering using EQ 318B heads if this happens.

Jeep/truck/van what are the differences betwen them? batterytray clearance is not a problem since i dont have one but what else?

Stock magnum distributors usefull as is and/or with aftermarket EFI or carbed? Have a couple LA distributors so not a an isue if the magnum distritbutor is uselesswould just be good to know.

What powersteering hooses would be compatible to run the Magnum powersteeringpump with a Borgeson Steeringbox or a stock powersteeringbox in 73 Duster?

The most comon Magnum engines over here are 5.2s in Jeep Grand cherokees from the 90s´ and 5.9s from Durangos but im leaning more towards the Jeep engines, since they are much more plentifull, seems to be in better shape with lower milage and so much cheaper that the price difference for a running engine is big enough to almost finance a set of bare EQ heads alone..
I know these things can be converted to run LA timingcovers but im thinking that it would be nice to run the multirib belt and its stable accesorymountingsystem that is already set up for a much more powerfull alternator and such even if they are not as good looking and kills the option to run a mechanical fuelpump.

Currently running a LA hydraulic flat tappet in my magnum based stroker, had a slight issue with pushrods, had to take the assembled engine to the machine shop to have them measured.

One thing you might consider.....96/97/98 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 engines came with the large hole
2 1/16" exhaust manifolds. The starter is on the passenger's side on these engines, don't know about the Durango engines?? treblig

What combination do you want to run; carb or fuel injection?
Differences between trucks is exhaust manifolds and power steering pump location. Steering pump moves up or down, and a little tighter toward the engine depending on vehicle. Engine short blocks are otherwise interchanchable.
Factory Magnum distributor cannot be used with a regular ignition system and carb setup. Factory LA distributor can go in Magnum's place to fix that with no modifications on carb setups.
Bypass hose mismatch is a minor issue. The hose gets a little weird bend but works fine.
I never tried placing a Magnum timing cover over a long snout LA cam. Easy enough to buy a short snout Magnum style camshaft. If I have time tonight, I'll slide a long snout cam in and check that clearance.

The comp cam I run was for a LA with the bolt on fuel pump eccentric. I didn't use the eccentric and run the magnum timing cover and serpentine setup.
Many people use the van power steering as it moves it lower down. This normally interferes with the battery tray, but as the OP stated he doesn't have one to worry about.

Thanks for posting that update, sport74. I won't waste time with my mockup since you already proved out yours.

Will probably run headers, got a set of (for the application very oversized) 1 7/8"TTI headers that i could use or i might just fab something up but that is relevant information will run my old 904 transmission so the starter will be one the driver side, regardless.
            Thank you.

Not sure yet that depends on money,if i get it all togheter and still have enough money to put some "selftuning" EFI system on the thing i will but i have a couple carbs i could use instead if money gets tight.
Good thats not going to put a big dent in the plan then, since i have a couple distributors left over and i can surely live with a oddlooking bypass hose.

The thought about camoptions where mostly for future reference since i have a left over solid roller and it would suck to get everything set up nicely with the magnum front accessories and then have to change them again if i want to get alitle more serious about things in the future.
            Thank you.

Thanks thats some good knowledge:) darn it must look alitle nicer with the powersteering pump alitle lower but finding a mangum out of a van over here is pretty much hopeless, plenty of dodge vans from the 80s but hardly any newer vans that came with magnums. Mostly Durangos and Jeeps in the junkyards and a very limited supply of rams but not a big problem it will be more than good enough for me anyway:)

The combination im loosely thinking of for my 73 Duster:
Most probably a stock shortblock 318Magnum but a 360magnum might do if i find one for the right money at the right time and place.
The thought is to create a lowbuck fun combination that i can build on over time and do right at some later point in the future, this car has been parked forever and i care more about getting it rolling with alitle extra power and attitude than it being done perfectly right.
            Eq318B heads
alitle more cam, maybe hydraulic roller around 220-225 or so@.050 to get some attitude.
1 7/8" TTI headers and Airgap LA intake either EFI or a old 750proform or 800 Edelbrock i got left over
            3200Rpm converter and 904trans.
3.21 or 3.91gears got both but the later should be a whole lot more fun.

Yeah i know both carb options are terrible a 600-650 would probably be a whole lot better on a 318 but i will make it work good enough given some time.

Will it be a missmatch? yeah probably, will it sound cool and put me back in the seat alitle when i want it to? yup it will probably be good enough for me for a while then i can build a better suited shortblock later.
Why i would put that kind of cam in such a mild engine? i was ruined by larger cams in 340s and will probably be dissapointed if its not atleast alitle rough around the edges.
The idea with the EQ heads is that those will put me alitle ahead of the game, since they would give alitle more power, would let me save alitle money on the intake and its an upgrade i would do later on anyway and therefore smarter to do now instead of getting a new intake to suit the stock magnum heads when i already have a good intake.

Feel free to critiqe my plan.

I like the plan. Get it running and start enjoying it.
Nothing wrong with a 318 Magnum if that's more common in your area.

Only this part left i think to figure out, what powersteering hooses would be compatible to run the Magnum powersteeringpump with a Borgeson Steeringbox or a stock powersteeringbox in 73 Duster?its not that i cant make something work, would just be nice to be able to order most stuff at once.

Do a search in the magnum swap section for this, I'm sure someone here has the exact same setup and has a thread about it. I find it easier on the wallet this way

I have looked thrue this section and the steering and suspension section aswell,im probably blind or just plain to dumb to find the right searchwords just like usual Lol..
Yep it tends to make a difference :)

I browsed through the other links, but figured that last one had the same information. I could see where the last link would be confusing when everyone else is using stock hoses

After thinking about this for a day,i wonder if this is another one of those cases where there is differnces betwen applications that is easy to forget about, could it be a different powersteering pump on that application,as in Jeeps having different frontaccesories comared to trucks?,i just cant see the stock old Abody hoses reaching all the way up to the top of a pump sitting that high up.

Hydraulic shops will make you any kind of hose, thats not an issue. Or at least they do in finland. Im going to use Jeep ps pump on my magnum 318.

Did not think of that option, thank you!
I guess the inventory and pricing is similar in Finland to Sweden in the junkyards!

I tried to find a 5.9 for two years and just couldnt find one thats reasonably priced. I Wont pay 1500€ (15000kr) for engine that I have to tore down anyway. I got the 318 for 100€ but I only use the block, rods, accessorybracket and timingchain cover.

That is quite similar. 360 is about the same, 318 about 5000Kr or 500 Euro at the junkyard.
I will probably get someting that runs and just add a intakemanifold for carb and a cam with some attitude and of course an oilpan,im sort of thinking that either im doinga 318 with EQ heads or a 360 with stock heads. Thats pretty much the difference on the price of the engines.
