Good evening ladies and gents,

Started pulling my new to me 1974 Plymouth Scamp with a 4 speed swapped in (swap was done by the previous owner) apart for some much needed maintenance. I drove the Scamp for a few months and had zero issues with the transmission other than some howling in 4th gear. I decided I would start with removing the transmission first, then the motor. To my surprise, part of the bearing retainer has been broken off. This is my first manual transmission car so this is all a bit new to me. Should I be looking for an issue somewhere or should I be looking for a new bearing retainer? I planned on taking the transmission to a trans guy to have it looked over and rebuilt with gaskets due to it leaking EVERYWHERE, as well as a new clutch kit. If some of you could spare some advice it would be much appreciated.

That's an overdrive right.
In the highest gear power actually goes down to the cluster first, then back up into the tiny overdrive gear. That means the front bearing is always working in that selected gear. Which means, as the bearing gets older, it gets noisy in overdrive, quieter in Direct/Third.

I've rebuilt a lotta lotta manual transmissions, but I've never seen a broken retainer like yours. Which makes me very curious.

Interesting. It is an aluminum OD. Hoping maybe I broke it pulling it out??? Not sure as it looks like its been repaired before.

Most likely not broken in the car. They get used to pick up the transmission when they're out sitting around and the bearing retainer isn't meant for that. I've seen several of these broken and they were all related to lifting/moving/pulling the transmission.

Looks like someone broke it and welded it back on, unsuccessfully.

Buy a new bearing retainer and check the condition of the front bearing.

Thank you!

The only time I’ve seen that happen is when the bell housing is way out of line.

The worst was a Chevy. My friend replaced the bearing retainer three times.

Then he bought a different transmission and it did it again. I can’t remember how far off it was but at the time I was surprised the gear box would even slide in.
