I am looking for a complete trans rebuild kit and would like to know what you would recommend based on your experience. My application is street with 1 or 2 trips to the track a year. 273 cid w/Edelbrock RPM Performer heads, Air Gap intake, 10:1 cr, Edelbrock 650 cfm carburetor. 3200-3500 RPM stall, 3:91 rear gear. Thx!

Thx FURY440! I am doing some research on various complete rebuild kits for my 904. I have very little experience rebuilding transmissions so I plan on leaving it to the professionals!

For sure,.you can always buy the kit you want, pull the trans yourself and take it to a "good" trans shop/guy. I have a good trans guy here in Jersey we use all the time. I'm going to have mine done next spring by him. Nothing wrong with my trans, but want to freshen it up. He charges us $300 for his time and includes a new converter and rebuild kit of our choice for $200. So for $500. I'm good with that..!!

Keep in mind that TCI, B&M, etc. are only repackagers of parts. Like Transtar and others they buy their friction plates from companies such as Borg Warner, Raybestos and Alto. They purchase gasket sets from one of the two or three gasket set assemblers and bands from Raybestos/ Borg Warner. The kits may come in their own boxes, but there is no difference in the quality of the kits if their parts come from the major suppliers. Depending upon how much grunt you've got coming from the engine, some of the performance transmission builders (who also package soft part kits) may recommend putting in performance plates. Don't forget to replace all bushings and washers. Put the Transgo TF-2 shift kit in it, or if you want a manual shift valve body, the Transgo TF-3 is the route to go.
Don't order your converter without letting your converter supplier everything you've done to your engine, and if you've had it on a dyno, make sure you give them the information off the sheet. From the information you've currently supplied I think that you could find the 3200-3500 stall may be too much. If you've got the spec sheet that came with your camshaft make sure you give the give them that information. You're better off ordering a custom converter rather than looking for one off the shelf. There have been many posts/opinions in this forum about High Stall Converter Builders. Read what others have said and have a look on the Companies web site. If your engine is the early version of the 273, the converter pilot will measure 1.550".
DO IT RIGHT ONCE, and don't let low price be your only guide.
Hope this helps.

Hey transman, that's the kind of information I'm looking for. Regarding the torque converter stall, I contacted Dynamic torque converters and spoke with them. We disused my setup including cam specs and that we there recommendation. I am aware of the crank pilot dia. I rebuilt the engine using a 68 steel 340 crankshaft so I should be good. I do need to replace the input shaft and pump with the larger diameter 68 and up.
