Disagree with the seemingly automatic reply of "slap a 360 in there"
That isn't the automatic solution to every engine question like some people seem to think it is. I've had some 360s that were worse slugs than a typical tired stock /6.
Yes I prefer 318s to most 360s.
The 360s suck *** unless they have had some compression added. I dunno why Mopar had to put dishes pistons in 99% of all the 360s that they ever made.besides being gas sucking pigs
for what the op's asked for it seems to be the easiest/cheapest way to his goals. and how many 318's had good compression before slating the compression of 360's? and yes i've had a few 318's and i like them too (they are more frugal i agree) so there's no need to slate one motor for the same issue another has.

dan the man where are you incarcerated at? missouri is known for there penitentiary's being a tough lonely place. hang in there and keep dreamin

Dan, im afraid your real close to alienating yourself here with all your indecisiveness and your budget woes.. i can feel it happening, ...read the room because you already ticked off some of our most knowledgeable members... i wish you luck, your gonna need it.

Seems like my budget can't support my ideas Lol. Do I need a dual pattern cam? Headers or manifolds. Cylinder heads, 302's or speedmaster cylinder heads? Do I need good port velocity for what I'm wanting to do? Compression ratio most likely 9.25:1. I don't want to put money into factory heads if a good set of aftermarket heads would be about the same money. Stall converter speed 2,400 and a 3.55 gear ratio. Wanting to start getting parts soon Hopefully, I'm trying not to buy things twice or something I don't need for my application.
Determine what you want with this engine. Start with the desired end result and work back. Engine internal components are difficult to change later. Develop a plan, think about that for a bit and re examine that plan. Build a solid and reliable long block for your budget. Heads can be changed later. Camshaft lift and duration as those affect valve to piston clearance needs to be considered up front. Bigger valves later could be a problem, so get that right in your planning. If money is tight now, you can get it running with a 2 barrel carb that came on the engine and cast manifolds for exhaust. Easy enough to upgrade those later.
