I haven't been arournd here much the last year or two but I do lurk :happy1:

Anyway, I had back surgery a little over a year ago, unfortunately it didn't work. The reason I'm posting on this is I had several replys from people more or less in the same boat, so the results of this will be for them. I'm on the cusp of going in for the next surgery, in Canada the cusp is pretty vague :dontknow: I was slated to go in tomorrow, got bumped to the 13th and now I hear something broke in the OR so maybe the 21st?

My 1st surgery was a discectomy (cut the bulged disc off), and a foramonatomy, (sp?, drill holes in your vertebrae for nerve room)

This one is a fusion, hog out both sides of the vertebaes, add plates and screws and Bob's your Uncle, I hope :toothy7:

Hope all goes well for you.I too have back issues,4 herniated discs,4 pinched nerves. My discs are disinigrating causing pain daily,if it weren,t for meds I don,t think I,d working any longer.I,m too young to be getting surgery already(48)too scared if it doesnt work.Good luck and keep us updated.

I will update when I'm finally in and then out. Don't give up, you may just be one good surgery away from the good life, you have to be optimistic. I don't know how young you are, I'm 52 with extremely high mileage, besides this isn't an age thing, it's a condition thing, look at all the young pro athletes that have back surgery :poke:

Good luck, keep us posted. When/if I lose some more weight I to will be a canidate for back surgery. I have spinal stenosis http://www.spinalstenosis.org/ that probably started out with a herniated disc. I also have degenerative disc disease. The ageing process is not much fun......

My mom had similiar surgery a couple of years ago. She had a great doctor and came out better than she expected. Had three discs fused/bolted together and some bone removed for nerve clearance also. She is short, heavy, and diabetic. They were expecting complications healing with her being diabetic, but fortunately she came through without any complications and healed well.

Good luck and hope everything goes the way it is supposed to for you.

Something broke in the OR??? Sounds a little concerning... I hope they get it all fixed up and working good before you go in.

I hope your doctor is as good as hers was.

Once agian, good luck and I hope this one works out well for you this time.

Hello nice to meet you
My name is Bruce
I feel you pain
I had a Anterior lumbar fusion for my lower L4 L5 S1 as well as a inguinal hernia and a umbilical hernia all at once.
I was good for a few years then I had a car accident and now have a fracture that cannot heal and I need another fusion
but that's life and we go on ,I wish you the best in your recovery and my advice take it slow and keep healthy and exercise as much as you can before surgery and after recovery,
over time you will feel the rest of your spine feeling the load and the healthy routine fights that tenancy,
Ask for help often ..no pride here call in iou's and rely on family and friends and watch bending and turning.(let your body heal on this one!
you can use a crutch for a broken leg, a sling for an arm, a brace for your neck but your back???
My mending could have been better if I listened but.. my kid was little and i bent over twisted played as best I could I slowed and compromised the healing it did go solid but not 100% and I had a bone fusion with no cage, screws or anything used bone grafted from my hip, still did well until an auto accident.
Now as I wear pain patches get pain blocks and wait for my next surgery
at 47 I feel 67
I wish you the best and hope you feel better knowing there are others in your same boat!
think positive!

That's a lot levels, are they in a row or all over the map? The discectomy part of my operation did work, that was my initial problem, pain down the left leg, had that for 15 years or so off and on, and it's good now. My right leg became the problem a few years ago and that didn't get better with the previou surgery. Pain meds do nothing for me, it's good that they help you but it's no way to live. You may have to bite the bullet one day and go for surgery.

Good luck

Thanks, appreciated!

I have a couple friends with spinal stenosis, one of them has done very well living weights to strengthen the supporting muscles. I don't know how much weight you're carrying but no doubt less is better on the back. Hope you can get in and get fixed too. Yeah aging sucks doesn't it.

Thanks, always nice to hear good stories about the surgery. For an old broken guy I'm not in bad shape, dropped 10 - 12 lbs recently and weigh about the same as I did in highschool 35 years ago, so that's in my favour I hope.

I have a great Doctor, very well regarded so I have total faith in him. Not too crazy about the broken OR thing, how crazy is that.
Prayers sent. Hope all is well soon and that this one works

Hi Bruce, that sounds like quite the surgery you had, I'm happy to hear it went well and worked. Sorry to hear a car accident screwed it all up again :banghead:

They're not doing the bone graft type for me, it's called "Lumbar Spinal decompression plus pedicle screw fixation and fusion". I was a bit of an idiot after my last surgery, it seemed to work so well, I pushed my luck and was right back where I started. Not sure if it was my fault but probably. This time I'm going to be a saint and there's a back brace I have to wear for 3 months which should help. They're going to take out quite a bit of bone apparently so that should give the nerves the room they need.

I hope you get in soon for the next surgery and they get you fixed up. I know from posting about my last one that there's many here in the same boat, or worse, misery loves company

Hello Rob :hello2: It has been a while  now that I think about it.
Prayers going out for you and the doctors to do the work that is needed :thumleft:
and last's a long long time :color:

Hi Rob,my discs are all herniated in my lower back(lumbar area)from doing frontend alignments in an auto plant for 17 years, working 10-12 hr shifts.I finally changed jobs after advise from my doctor. The meds just mask the pain so I can manage.I tried not taking them, but was basically useless. My bad discs all buldge in the front,so bending over then standing straight up is a task(look hunched over like an old man)I,m gonna ask my doc to send me to a speacialist for help. The Comp doc that assest me is the one that told me my back is rotten(DDD)and that I couldn,t have surgery.Said I was lucky to be working?I will seek a second opinion.Good luck.

I had a discectomy in 2004 thought it was the biggest mistake I'd ever made. After 12 weeks of Physical Therapy at Travis Sports Medicine here in town. I was fine and back on the Soda Truck. After three months of work (the last one running two routes) I was hurt again. They gave something called nerve block injections on L4 and L5 and I've been back on the Truck ever since! Dr. Pepper Rules!

Definitely get a 2nd opinion, and from a neuro surgeon at that. I have no idea why they don't think you can have surgery? One of my wife's friends had six veretebrae fused 30 or so years ago and has been fine ever since so even in your tough spot you would like to think there's hope. I wish you luck

I've had a buch of those with very limited luck, worked a little bit a couple times but wore off within a week or two. I have heard stories like yours though where there was great relief and long lasting

Well I guess my update will have to wait, got bumped yet again, all the way to some vague time in September, if I'm lucky. Good thing I'm on the urgent list or they'd have to exhume my body to do the surgery. :banghead:

wow this is why im doing everything in my power not to have back surgery. Im sorry and i know how the pain is. and anyone around you who doesnt have any back problems doesnt understand. Best of luck.

Do you have to pay anything for your surgery? I realize you're in Canada is why I'm asking. Never have asked.

Best of luck with your surgery. My friend has had back surgery and he is doing better.

I know that feeling well with having diabetes.

I have had a fusion and laminectomy at L5-S1, I can empathize. The pain before surgery was 8-8.5 on a 0-10 scale, now its about 4-5! I can live with that.

Eh, Rob...long time...no text!!! I feel for you...I've had back problems for years...not bad enough to need surgery, but bad enough to stop me from doing certain things. Hope all works out for you, whenever the BC Medical System decides they're "here for you"!!

BTW...heard from JimmyBoy at all?

Good luck! :hello1:

I don't know how bad you are but for me I got to the point where it was unbearable and only then did I take a number, and have to wait what appears to be 5 months best case scenerio. Should be better in the US but I keep hearing more and more that you're heading in our direction in that regards. Get in line early

That sucks..hope u get in soon

Thanks, aprreciate it!

I know that feeling well with having diabetes.

I have a work related medical plan so I don't have to pay, not sure how it works for the less fortunate, I want to think for the most part they don't have to pay. About 9 years ago I had cancer and it was covered but I had to do these extra injections that cost a fortune, most of it was covered by my work's extended medical coverage. That wouldn't be covered for most people which is sad.

I can relate to diabetes a bit from having to inject myself with the nupegin (sp?) for the cancer. I really feel for people, especially kids that have to do that, it's always there, no down time or you could die. Which reminds me of how lucky I am. :thumrigh:

Same place for me, I would love 4 - 5 too :hello1:

I have had back surgery and it is not all ways the answer if you can live with the pain and you are not falling down do not get surgery.
I have had it 3 times and I still hurt keep moving do lots of stretching.
I was falling down about every 20 feet so I had to go for it.
Now they want to cut me open again no way I will live with the pain.
Just my thoughts about it once you start it never stops. :banghead:
Good luck with what ever you do.

The reason I ask is I have NO insurance. I can't afford it. Everything comes out of pocket.

I didn't see your post earlier. Yeah I'm ready if and when they ever are. No I haven't heard anything from JimmyBoy in a very long time. I should really send him an e-mail and see what's up.

I'm not falling down but I can't live this way either, can't work, can only walk for a minute or two and basically spend most of the day hunched over looking at my feet. I know surgery isn't always going to work, the last one didn't but I really have no choice. Sorry to hear about your condition, sounds bad.

The reason I ask is I have NO insurance. I can't afford it. Everything comes out of pocket.

That stinks, I'm fortunate that way but with all the delays I'll be loosing quite a bit of pay from not working.

Gosh lots of people have back problems. Hope everyone that has back problems get them fixed and can live a long life pain free.
