Stellantis Media - Stellantis’ All-new 2.0-liter Hurricane 4 Turbo Engine Packs Big Power With Race-proven Combustion Technology

This will be another failure. The Hurricane-4 engine. A tiny 2.0 4 banger being boosted and squeezed to high compression and power levels, with a 5,000 psi fuel injection system.

It'll be overstressed and fail before 100,000 miles, and at high price. And spare parts will be expensive.

And for what? To supposedly save a few percent on mileage and emissions to make politicians happy.

A Slant 6 is much simpler and cheaper. You could rebuild a Slant and the vehicle it comes in, get less mileage, be emissions exempt, and still save a lot of money! :)

I don't know, it makes more power and torque than the 3.6 Pentastar and still get's better mileage. And based on most other 4 cylinders (K20 and similar) they are generally pretty robust. Plus, it's supposed to have a 500 mile range in the Grand Cherokee.

I would guess that if it was all about a few percent on mileage then power would be the same or down. I think instead it is intended to be a better motor, and mileage/emissions are better for it. I bet they could detune this thing and get 50+ mpg in the right car if they wanted. Instead they pushed the HP/TQ up and still gained mileage.

That said, not sure what to expect the aftermarket will do with it. Looks like it is already pushing 35psi boost, so someone is probably going to have to find other ways to find more power. Maybe the timing curve is severely reduced, it does have 12:1 compression and run on 87 octane swill. Perhaps Mopar will come out with a "Turbo Toys" kit with a high octane button and revised timing that give's 150 more HP.

I was a Turbo Mopar guy for awhile ... ok, I still am a closet Turbo Mopar guy. This motor makes me think back to those days. I would be all for a small car with this motor in it, something around 3,000# and even better if it was RWD and had a manual trans. I bet it would fun as all get out to drive. I keep daydreaming about an SRT4 Neon, or a 2.4 Stratus with a turbo and a 5 speed, or even a Focus ST, so something along those lines.

But the place I bet this thing shines is in the new Ramcharger truck. That thing is supposed to have over 600hp in electric motors and a 3.6 gas engine to charge the batteries and is supposed to go over 600 miles on a tank of gas. A truck that has a 600 mile range? Now put that 2.0 Hurricane in it and I bet it is over 700 miles.

High strung....I wouldn't bet on it being a 100k motor. It might be great to own under warranty.

Turbo 4s can be reliable. My daughter has an '08 Cobalt SS turbo puts down 290 hp and 330 tq at the wheels (intake, exhaust, tune). Engine and turbo original. Around 140k miles and previous owner street raced it with youtube videos. Car has been beat on hard its entire life. Does not leak anything and doesn't burn any oil either. My guess is it has at least another 50k miles left in it. No catch can doesn't seem to need it either. My daughter's husband had another Cobalt SS turbo high miles beat on hard same thing engine was flawless. I always laugh ppl saying GM is junk....

35 pounds boost in a GAS engine?!? In a 4000 lb. suv? No thanks.

Well, maybe swapped into a REAL light car. Fiat 850 roadster. Bugeye sprite. Smart (not really smart)car?

Uhh, I thought those were supercharged......, the Ecotec was a good, durable engine,..the later larger ones in the SUV's are F'n junk.....oil burnin' POS's that empty the crankcase & set cam timing codes constantly. People change the oil & then take 'em in & trade 'em before they can reset the MIL.......

Uhh, starting in 2008 they were turbo charged. The 2007 and back were supercharged.

The EcoBoost Mustangs do pretty good. Haven't heard of a failure and they can run hard.

This will be another failure.
Probably.
If it were going in a light compact sedan or sports car, it would probably have a chance to live for a decent amount of time. Now put it in a heavy Jeep Grand Cherokee, I'm sure it will wear out fast. Just another failure waiting to happen because of the wrong application.
