What would make a good paint for the 70 dart grille? I mean I have the color picked out I want to black it all out but what brand and type of paint? Do I need to scuff it or anything as well?
Instead of using the regular flat or semi-gloss paints that dull and get dirty and stain too fast, we've gone to a new system for the grille black-outs........
Naturally, you need to clean it with Simple Green (or something comparable) and a toothbrush to get all the dirt and dust....then let it dry, and steel wool the plastic with 000 or 0000.................Rinse off with a hose, let it dry, and clean it with a good quick dry prep solvent.
Mask off the areas not to be painted........... The best black in our opinion is Dupli-Color Universal Metallic Black.......just enough metal to give it a sheen without a shine, and even feels like an argent to some extent...Spray on a coat of Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter first, then 2 coats of Black to cover it.....then a couple of coats of Dupli-Color Clear (NOT Enamel....standard clear, which is Lacquer).......Just let it cure overnight, and put it on. The Lacquer has a natural sheen, but doesn't have a very good "gloss", unless you put it on extremely heavy......you want thinner coats for grille work
This paint is easy to keep clean, doesn't fade out and get crappy looking with a little sun or dirt, and lasts. If you'd rather not have any metallic at all, they also have a Universal Black with no metallic added.
Cheaper would be a Krylon Fusion Satin Black...........it adheres well and looks good for a black-out, but it won't hold up as well in our opinion. 8)
