I would like to adjust my toe myself befor I go the the shop to have the front lined up.All front parts are new.Can the adjustment be done when the weight is all on the wheels? or does the wheels must be in the air.Never done this so some pointers would be helpfull..

It can be adjusted in the air but it must be measured on the ground at ride height after the suspension has been jounced. This settles the suspension for an accurate reading. The toe changes as the wheels move up & down as well as when changing caster and camber settings. That's why its the last thing to be adjusted during an alignment.

How far to the alighnment shop?

Put some sand down on the garage floor where the front tires will be, pull the car in and have at it. Generally speaking, the more time you spend the better it's going to be. I had to drive my car about 35 minutes to one of the only places in town that would even think about doing an alignment on "something that old"

Use a tape measure and measure from equal points on the tire at the front and back until the measurements are equal (both tires will be parallel)...the alignment will set to specs for you.
