I recently rebuilt and tested 4 AVS carbs that I had. Does anyone know why the float sizes on the 1-7/16 primary carbs are different from the 1-11/16 carbs?

Are you sure the floats you found are original? The AVS carbs that I have had had corrugated floats as best as I can recall.

Yes, I think the floats are original, I had several parts carbs to compare. The small primary carbs all had the small smooth floats, while the big primary carbs had the larger "corrugated" type floats. The rebuild kit instructions actually have different float height/drop setting for each type.

That's a great question. For drag racers, smaller floats would allow for more volume in the larger float bowls.
Stock and Super-Stock guys are probably already doing this.

Probably just the year they were made. I have seen both in AVS carbs, but not noticed a pattern.
The carbs are in the 1968 - 1969 range. 4401,4615, 4682 small carbs and 4640, 4618, and 4429 for the larger carbs.

I thought about that too. Wondering what would happen with the smaller floats swapped into the larger primary type carbs?

I would not mix up the floats. The AFB/AVS carbs have large float bowls [ compared to say, a QJ which has a single float bowl ]. The largest carbs were 750 cfm, so they can only feed an engine up to a certain amount of hp; you would need a blown or turboed engine to increase the fuel demand.
