Will a pinion that has excessive backlash cause a vibration at high speeds?
I know it has excess, cause when I put it in D or R it has a nice clunk to it.
When I put it on the hoist you can move it back and forth real good. It is not the u joints as they are new.
This center was rebuilt about a month ago, so I wonder if the backlash is not set right.
Any thoughts?

If you already suspect too much backlash, it should be checked, whether it turns out to be the cause of vibration or not. I'd do it sooner than later, since any vibration caused by the gears is likely chewing the gears.
