Got pitting on the bearing surface of the axle, my mind says replace the axle, my wallet says it's fine run it till it causes another problem. I already replaced the bearings and seals.
See post #6.I've used many "axle repair bearings" before, it's a unitized bearing and seal whose bearings ride on a different part of the axle. Don't know if they make them for an 8.8 but I know across all the brands ( 1/2 ton truck and lower, cars included in that). There's only a few bearing and seal numbers that seem to fit (most) all of them with c clips. Ford Mopar or GM. Look at year make and model of several brands and the book will come up with the same numbers for many

I've already bought one for the shortened side, guess I'll buy another. If this was an around town thrasher I'd run it as is but am looking to do some long trips with this car. What does your wallet say about this one?

Ha, guess I'll be replacing the carrier bearings too as they look the same. The rear sat for 20 years, the bearings and races started rusting where they were contacting each otheryeah, causes another problem like eating up the bearing and having that come apart and wreck the housing or put enough shimmy shake to gut out the diff, or worst case lose a wheel.
that's done weebled all its wobbles out hombre. replace.
Yup. Probably for the best.Road trips? Replace it.
The good thing about an 8.8 is a rebuild kit are pretty cheap!Ha, guess I'll be replacing the carrier bearings too as they look the same. The rear sat for 20 years, the bearings and races started rusting where they were contacting each other
Agree.I would replace it, especially if your pushing some power or launching with sticky tires.
